user reviews of the Peter Tavy Inn, Peter Tavy

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We stopped here during a 10 mile walk in the area.
Not a good as the Elephants nest we visited an hour earlier and did'nt feel as comfortable either.
It was awkward to get served as locals were hogging the small bar area (happens everywhere!) we managed to find a table out the way and luckily it was very late at lunchtime as it would have been awful if all the tables were taken as we were only drinking and not eating.

Not my sort of place 5/10

More of a food pub with a very small area for casual drinkers. Certainly not the place to relace, the staff were rushing everywhere and everywhere. Did not feel comfortable and went to the pub in Merrivale, not on this website that I can find but altogether a more relaxed and friendly pub with good pub food.

We really liked this pub, as it fitted what we were looking for at the time - a pub with a decent range of drinks and excellent food. In truth, I don't think I would have felt too comfortable if I was only drinking, as there did not seem much space for drinkers. However, the welcome we received was good and the place must have a good reputation locally, with the car park packed and all tables taken (our pervious pub - the Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale was extremely quiet. The food - curried parsnip soup and duck in a star anise and plum sauce was gorgeous. Beers were Branscombe Vale Draymans Best, Dartmoor Legend & Jail Ale. Cider was Sams Devon Poundhouse cider. The interior is typical country pub, as the previous reviewer states, even down to the smoky atmosphere from the log fire. Recommended.

Lovely real fire and a typical Country Pub atmosphere - How it should be.

Exactly which other "great pubs in Tavistock" markhuxley101 on 07/08/09? The one thing Tavi lacks is a lot of good, never mind great, pubs. On the other hand the Peter Tavy is an excellent pub, with outstanding food and excellent beer, usually 4 ales on. Minstrels shall sing of the steak pie which is delicious and very reasonably priced. As is common in these straitened times for pubs, it is as much of a restaurant as it is a pub but at least it is still open and serving good beer. WE found the staff absolutely charming and providing excellent service. Also the local cheese plate was cheese plate sized i.e very similar to what you get in restaurants but with the pleasing addition of labels to let you know exactly what you are eating - a good idea which other places should copy. The only snag is that there is no accommodation so you have to find a volunteer to drive home. Go there, drink the beer, eat the pie, and the cheese, and the desserts! Good pub, worth a detour 9 - well you have to detour to go to Peter Tavy in truth - rates an 8

Have been to this pub a number of times over the past 4 years and always found it to be excellent - never have I experienced anything other than great food and good service. Have travelled from North East for hoilday and always make a point of stopping at the Peter Tavy.

Heard great reviews about this pub, and much of it is true.

We travelled from the other side of Exeter and found a quaint pub with an extensive menu, although the pub was let down by it's service staff, particularly the manageress who could certainly benefit from customer service training.

Unfortunately this seemed to rub off onto the other staff who appeared arrogant and stubborn, and when there were problems with our food did nothing to resolve or compensate for their mistake.

We left feeling extremely disappointed that such an opportunity is being missed. We wish that we could've written a positive review here describing great food and outstanding service (because that's what we paid for) although you'll have to visit one of the other great pubs in Tavistock if that's what you're looking for.

I LOVE this pub, Blackawton beers from Saltash are a big attraction.Very relaxing, the food is expensive , the situation nestling in to Dartmoor superb, after a stiff walk just the thing.loads of well picked guest ales.

Just eaten been there again for evening meal.
Not up to usual standard, over an hour wait for food & then horrible tasting veg ! Local cheese platter a joke, was tempted to ask for a mgnifying glass to find the cheeses !!!
Coupled with surly waitress & dirty glasses not being cleared away, not good enough for the prices charged.

Good food of a consistent quality if a little expensive, friendly service & good beer.

Food is very good but a bit overpriced. Beer is always well kept but this is not so much a pub as a restaurant that serves drinks. Having said that always made to feel welcome when not eating even with my cocker spaniel.

This is my nearest local pub its basically a FOOD pub that serves good beer , the landlord can be a bit of a snob BUT basically he's a good guy. The FOOD is GREAT albeit that you pay the price .

This pub has a small bar area and loads of outside tables and a large room set aside for meals. This is a relaxed and comfortable place for a drink or a well-cooked dinner.
