Still a first class heritage pub. The victorian interior remains beautifully preserved and the Robinsons ales supplemented by a decent selection of guests. Full marks as far as I'm concerned.

Probably your must visit pub if stuck in Preston, Classic Victorian building, decent selection of ales on in good form, with a bar the perfect height for those people who like to lean on a bar.
I can't find a listing for the nearby Black Bull though judging by comments and from my own visit it's probably unsurprising they have had it removed.

Classic pub interior, topped off by reasonably good ale. An absolute must if you visit Preston

The last of the 4 pubs I wanted to tick in one evening in Preston and architecturally this is by far the best.

This Robinsons pub sitting in the middle of the shopping area is absolutely stunning. Original Burmantoft tiled bar, a full mosaic tiled floor, stain glass windows, tiled half walls, snug seating areas, hall of mirrors seating area...this pub is chuffing beautiful.

8 hand pumps, 4 with Robinsons ales on, 3 guests and 1 spare pump. I start with a guest from Norwich’s Fat Cat Brewing Company Wild Cat @ 5.0% before moving onto Robinson’s Trooper, both ales are excellent but the Trooper is exceptional.

The 2 bar man are very chatty and knowledgeable about their ales, the juke box is stacked with quality music and it great value at 4 tunes for a £1. I stayed for a few hours on Saturday (I was the last to leave), then went back for a couple more pints of Trooper on Sunday afternoon before my train home.

Stunning interior, great ales, sharp service, perfect location this is another 10/10 for me...a proper bobby dazzler.

This place is worth visiting even if it’s only to gaze in awe at the building (it’s Grade II listed) ! If you don’t marvel at the Victorian exterior, then you get some taste of what is to come when you see the pub’s name picked out in a tiled floor mosaic when you open the entrance door.

The building is triangular shaped and there is a semi-circular central bar, again with tiled walls and floor. There are two rooms at the front with prints of old Preston and log fires, whilst at the rear is a “room of mirrors”. The clientele are decorous and welcoming.

However, there is a downside. I’ll start by mentioning the piped music, which nobody was listening to. The place is a Robinsons tied house, and at my last visit there were 4 of their beers on tap plus 4 guests. Whilst this was an increase in numbers from previous visits, it was also a decrease in variety ! Old Tom was no longer available on tap, and all the guests were blonde / golden ales. I had Robinson’s Rouble Hop (IPA) which was admittedly very nice, but I could have killed for a stout or mild !

Building 10/10, beers 6/10 – I guess that makes it 8 overall ?

Larger inside than I expected, and very pleasant. Friendly knowledgeable bar staff (although a request from a rather odd youth for "the blood of the leprechaun" was met with mystification - it was St. Patrick's day though). A very well-kept pint of 5% ABV stout from a new brewery in Southport - the name escapes me at the moment, but I had not seen it before - and there was plenty of other choice of ale including a house bitter. Very reasonably priced, too.

Superb - as always! 10/10.

Good pint of Unicorn at a good price in a busy pub with a good mix of customers. Visit for that as well as the classic architecture.

The classic Victorian pub with all the etched glass and wood panelling you could wish for - truly evocative of the nineteenth century on a sloping mill town street. Ales, from Stockport's Robinson's, are good too and the wall hangings add to the atmosphere. Quiet on the occasion of our visit on a Good Friday and no idea if it fills up with geezers needing excitement of an evening but looks to be about as good an option as Preston has.

Lovely Victorian Robbie's pub.

Highly recommended.

Was up for the Preston Guild celebrations at the weekend. The Black Horse is still the wonderful pub it was when I was a student here in the mid-80's.

Great range of well kept beers; cheerful, helpful staff and comfortable snugs in which to have a session.

Long may it remain just as it is now.

Shame about the idiot who decided that the snug was the place to escape to from the hubbub of the bar to make his mobile phone call. All 8 punters in there now know that his missus was not happy at all about having to come and pick him and his drunk mates up and give them all lifts home. I hope she gave him down the banks when she got her hands on him.

I left Preston when I was 18 and only get back occasionally, but I can honestly say that over the last 40-odd years this place hasn't changed at all, about the only pub in town that hasn't. Still excellent in every way, long may it continue!
scoobybooze - 3 Feb 2012 19:32
Well preserved victorian boozer - thought it was only vertical drinking until I discovered the snugs.
wrichard - 13 Dec 2011 20:52
I've been in and out over the years and can't quite make up my mind as to how fantastic this pub is - hence holding back from scoring. In two words it's "awesome" "gem". It ought to have the word "legendary" it is that good - never had a bad pint and excellent range always on tap. I've given it an 8 (I'm a hard marker) but it probably is worth 9...or 8.5 as a minimum
ulverstoned - 17 May 2011 21:03
Nice town centre street corner robinson's pub with attractive central bar and various large snugs.Four handpumps(2.70pint),cute barmaid,8/10

Bags of character! Well preserved Victorian feel with all the tiling and small seperate rooms. The place was busy at 9-30pm on a Friday with no room to sit but that did not seem to a matter. Beer good and the staff very helpful and friendly. Don't miss a visit here at any time if you are in town.
reverenddavid - 2 Apr 2011 15:22
Nice pub if you like Robbies beers, went during the day and it looked a bit tired , needs some loving care. The interior is good but could be so much better with some tlc, beer was in good nick.
Henners - 21 Mar 2011 20:13
As good as I remember, though felt like I'd landed back in Stockport ! Old Tom was good, barman friendly, unmissable.
mtaylor40 - 1 Mar 2011 19:45
its like stepping back in time.
always a pleasure to visit this pub.
sandgrownun - 20 Feb 2011 13:26
Nice town pub with a good range of Robinsons beers and a well preserved interior. The old tiling and separate rooms give it plenty of character. We sat in the cosy front room, where there were pictures of Old Preston. 6 beers were on - Unicorn, Double Hop, Old Tom, Dissy Blonde, Bizzy Bee and Old Stocport. Westons Traditional Scrumpy was also a welcome addition. The bar staff were friendly. Definitely one to try on any trip to Preston.
blue_scrumpy - 15 Aug 2010 13:06
An absolute gem!

Fantastic beers, friendly and helpful bar staff, superb interior with lots of separate rooms.

Proudly old-fashioned, but spotlessly clean and efficiently run - just like a traditional town centre pub should be.
cobbo - 15 Mar 2010 13:12
What a fantastic pub:-surely a national treasure. Everything you would expect from a Victorian pub:-mosaic floors, snugs, beautiful ceramic tiled bar and walls, fireplaces, leaded glasswork, the works. Robinsons old Stockport was one of the lower gravity beers but went down easily and had plenty of flavour. The barman was very friendly and would wax lyrical about the history of the pub (and Preston ) to anyone who asked. Terrific pub. They just don't make them like this any more.
tarkatherotter - 28 Sep 2009 17:18
we intended just a quick pint here en route to another pub. Well, it was so good that we stayed on and forgot about the other place (By all accounts, we made a good choice). Great pub. fantastic interior, the staff were absolutely brilliant, really friendly and helpful, and a well-timed moment of sarcasm. The beer was absolutely first class, especially the Dizzy Blonde. A real pub.
Dylanwing - 9 Aug 2009 21:51
Robinson's pub serving their full range of ales including Old Tom which is served in 1/2 pt glasses due to its strength which from memory is 8.5%.

Hopefully, the fact that this is a listed building will mean that this place avoids the sort of hideous makeover that has blighted so many pubs up and down the country.

Staff were great and there was a good mix of clientele. I've noticed in my short time in the area that there are more youngsters drinking real ale than I'm used to seeing where I'm from (Bournemouth) which can only be a good thing.
johnkn7 - 12 May 2009 10:42
Echo everything said in the previous post. Great pub with a good selection of well-kept Robinsons ales. If you want to see what pubs looked like before the onset of themes and fake Victoria this is the place to go - the interior is superb. Well worth a visit when in Preston.
wobblybob - 11 Jan 2009 14:09
The place is what I would call a proper pub. No food but good beer ( including the potent old tom) and a good mix different people everything from market traders to students. The pub is a listed building and the interior is great.
olemog - 2 Nov 2008 17:58
Can't believe this wonderful pub only has a 6.9 rating - it's the best one in Preston as far as I'm concerned. There's a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with a wide mix of customers and a good choice of drinks.
ineedsun - 19 Jul 2008 13:09
Great town centre pub with very traditional, old-world atmosphere with its own rooms and none of this 'open plan' nonsense. Fine beer too. That Old Tom sure is strong though!
ukteq - 27 Feb 2008 00:18
Fantastic traditional pub with a lovely Victorian interior, very busy on a Saturday night but good range of beers
GaryReggae - 12 Sep 2007 12:25
Sitting in the rear open snug, I had found pub paradise. Surrounded by mirrors along the whole horseshoe of the seating, topped with stained and leaded panels, facing a magnificent servery which at its front has rare 3D tiling. Two individual rooms each side of the bar have their own delightful character. On CAMRAs inventory of outstanding pub interiors and grade 2 listed, its run by Robinsons brewery. Stunning.
Alerover - 12 Jun 2007 16:00
Not much room to move here and even worse in the gents but the interior of the pub is a delight-now opens Sunday dinner-the mosaic floor used to be covered by carpets used to be used by a lot of "theatricals" when there was a theatre next door..
bagheas - 29 Mar 2006 21:25
Certainly one of the best pubs in Preston. Good beer (Robinson's - don't know where Theakston's came from)and a cosy atmosphere - top pub.
woodyptom - 25 Mar 2006 12:34
This is the first pub that I visited in Preston way back in 1991 - a stroke of luck! Always welcoming with excellent beer, quality surroundings and an interesting mix of fellow boozers. A great pub.
enricocadillac - 20 Jul 2005 18:36
Robinsons pub with usualy Old Tom and Scrumpy Jack cider on sale, this is one of the few pubs that has 3 entrances on seperate streets-although one is usualy locked-rooms can be hired for meetings ect.
Quiet usualy at the begining of the week but gets full at weekends-does not open Sundays-fruit machine-juke box-tv-cushty landlady and bar manager (landladies daughter)-if any trouble do not reach for bar stools-they weigh a ton
bagheas - 28 May 2005 21:52
Top olde boozer. Beautiful tiled walls , mozaic floors. 2 snugs at the front, booth at the rear.
Beer selection:- Theakstons type stuff ( Peculiar etc), Pedigree? Guiness (my tiple).
Upstairs open for jazz funk fusion razz mataz (sat night). Stare at oddly dressed student girlies and listen to george benson played backwards or somet.
Thanks for listening.
