A very large, grand looking pub on the outside and even bigger on the inside. You can eat anywhere but there is a specific restaurant bit within the pub, the outside bit also gets kitted out when sport is out (and even has a separate bar outside, pretty good really). The food is nice but expensive and the portions should be bigger for what you pay. Surprisingly 'safe' with its ale selection, with Taylor's landlord and Deuchars IPA and does do a couple changing beers. If youre looking to try some continental lagers then it's a better pub for that. Everething about the place is expensive, Landlord is about 3.80 a pint and the coffee is at least 50 p more than it should be. Okay for one and to admire the huge interior and the massive bar.

Massive foody place. Ok choice of beer but very expensive. Food also on the pricey side but very good. Service was excellent. Would visit to eat again but not for a drink.

I recently went for lunch at this pub with a friend and was very disapointed.
First of all, the food and drink are very overpriced. I ordered a prawn starter for almost 7.00. It came with three prawns in a greasy sauce(said thermador sauce which ive had many times before - it did not resemble this!) my main was a pork dish was was increadably salty and very small, and my dessert, a baked apple in puff pastly was overly sweet with soggy pastry.Awful! For the price ,its just not acceaptable! The service was not much better, we had to get up and ask for menu's and then again to order as the waiting staff(all very young) seemed to congregate around the bar area giggling and seemed put out when I asked if we could order. I also went for lunch with my parents months ago(cant remember what we had) and was bad then but thought I;d give it another go. Never again. This is a beautiful pub and I think it relies on people frequenting it just on its looks but to charge food at the price it is, but at bad quality is just not acceptable. There are lots of other lovley places to eat on burton road. Go to one of them instead!

We live in the West Didsbury area, but generally go for the more homely, and well, less-hip pubs.
This is mainly because we don't quite fit in with The Metropolitan crowd, and also the prices are SKY HIGH.
My partner in particular isn't keen on the place, but over the past month or so we have opted to go in with our family as we now have a little baby and noticed that the pub does cater for families. That is all fine as long as you don't want your daughter's bottle warmed up. The first time we went in they did give us a glass of water to heat the bottle, but just warm tap water.
Anyone with a baby will know you'll be waiting until closing time for a glass of tap water to warm a bottle of milk.
The second time my parents took our daughter in and again requested water to warm the bottle. This was met with disgruntled huffing from the barstaff, who again, offered a glass of tap water due to "health and safety" (I've been in many pubs with my daughter, and never before has this been an issue).
Highly unimpressed with this, my father decided to vacate the bar and on his way back to the table overheard the barstaff question "why people don't bring their own water to heat bottles". So much for convenience and service.
As my parents were about to pack up, the barstaff did eventually bring a container of boiling water over to heat my 4-month-old's bottle... but too late I'm afraid.
It's an absolutely beautiful building, and frankly wasted on the people who frequent the place. If you're looking for a nice atmosphere and good prices, try checking out The Railway across the road, or The Four in Hand and Old House at Home which are in the vicinity.

Very busy meat market housed in a magic building. The bit where meals are served is the best. It seems to be a bit of a pulling shop on a Friday and Saturday nights. Good location for pre-beers to a meal at the Great Kathmandu though.

The beer's OK but overpriced. Unless you're young and trendy, I wouldn't drink here - there's plenty of decent pubs nearby that don't charge London prices.

Pretentious, overproced and incredibly noisy on a Fri and Sat night. Lots of pretty young and not so young things there to see and be seen (and bump into you). Not a friendly place, and has an up market meat market aura. Never had a good nite there as the noise irked me no end.

I like the Metropolitan generally, but unless you get there early, avoid on a Friday and Saturday night, it's far too packed and it takes a while to get served but i guess that's the price for popularity.

If you love pubs, you probably won't love the Metropolitan. It's a giant newly renovated expensive impersonal chain pub for groups of young singles. They seem to drive from miles around to stand around gawping at each other (and you when you go in). Prices are worthy of London.
If you love pubs you're better off with the Railway over the road

I am at a loss to understand how this place gets awards. The building is impressive, and they have an open family policy, which is always popular, but the food is truly dreadful and overpriced, and it is very impersonal, with staff who seem to think they are far too important to be working there.
The worst thing about it is that the food is so awful. I have been there more often than I want to (with work people) and I can't think of one time over the last five years or so when I had a meal there that wasn't either cold, tasteless, overcooked, or just plain inedible.

Hmmm...dissappointing to say the least. Overpriced and with little to no atmosphere. I found this sadly pretentious and it is not the kind of place you would go if you are interested in getting a decent, reasonably priced pint and a bag of crisps that don't cost near to �1 a bag!

Got home on Saturday night to find my pregnant partner craving orange juice. With the local tesco being closed already I opted to go to the Met to see if they would be so kind to sympathise with my situation. They offered me one carton at a price of �2.40!...
I know its a business but that took the biscuit.
Get your act together Met!...have a heart!

This is the exact opposite of what a pub should be. No atmosphere, pricey beer, no jukebox, no pool table, no regulars, no character. Go over the road to the Railway instead, or if you insist on posing go to a bar!

Timothy Taylor is excellent but both the beer and food prices and quite high.
Save your money and go to the Lime Tree Restaurant round the corner!

The Met is very popular and has a good reputation for food and drink. However, too expensive (�2.70 for any of the 3 ales usually on offer) and beer served at lager temperature, but good when warmed a little. Price prevents us from coming here more often.

A 9.5 rating! (before I added mine). OK not bad, but not that great. *Very* expensive boozer. Decent range of ales but a somewaht sterile young execs vibe to the place.

Have a few pints of Joey Holts across the road at the Railway,before venturing in & watching the 2 blue notes in your hand reappear as 3 pints of lager!...Not the cheapest place,but it appears to keep the riffraff out(apart from myself as I`m intrigued by the blue note trick)...handy for a post meal pint after the foodie delights of lapwing lane & Burton Rd...Not a place to come on your own at night as animated groups abound.....Good pub

This is an excellent pub, good selection of beer including Timothy Taylor and Pedigree. The seating outside is good with heaters and it has a non smoking room. Its quite pricey but worth it.

Really good at catering for our large group (14 people) best food i have ever had in fact! Lovely atmosphere. Quite pricey but highly recommended.

Cosmopolitan atmosphere. Good food menu, with some interesting veggie options. Non smoking room. Nice out door space & outside bar in summer. Good Parking (not that anyone drinking should be using it!)

Large victorian building, big rooms, big tables, open fires. Guest Cask Ales include: Pedigree, Tim Taylor Landlord, Deuchars and Black Sheep. Staropramen, Stella and Carlsberg Lagers plus the usual Guinness and Strongbow. Good selection of bottle beers and wines by the glass. Good food throughout the bar incl the Met Burger(a must)and a pretty decent restaurant to boot. Outside bar in the summer with loads of space to to soak up the 'rays'.
