user reviews of the Roundhouse, Battersea

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Gastropub on a corner of Wandsworth Common, a short walk from Clapham Junction station. There was an upmarket crowd with a few dogs. Wandle was the only real ale. A bit of a disappointment, in all. Apparently I came here 8½ years ago, as I reviewed it on here. But, I don't recall it. Downgrading my rating to a 4/10.

Even by the standards of the area, £4.20 for a pint of Adnams Lighthouse is extortionate robbery. The bar staff should be wearing masks.

Be warned!!

We've ranked it as the WORST ever pub lunch. Seriously, if you're reading this, save yourself. It will only ruin your day if you go. The food was burnt, probably because is took 1.5 hrs to serve? Oh...and that's just the charcuterie board. Now that really is a talent. Everything else was similarly inedible. While the food was shocking...it wasn't quite as bad as the language from the kitchen. Educational for us, but even moreso for our 6 and 8yr old kids. We learned a few things.

They also managed to overcharge for the inedible food. I love optimism, but that's just wrong. Service / non-existant. Food...think 1970s comedy TV bad. As for atmosphere...well...while we all loved Fawlty Towers...nobody really wants to be on the receving end.

Please...save yourselves from the worst gastronomic experience ever. Trust us...this place is so awful its almost comical. If you're a sado-masochist however...you'll be tipping heavily!

Pub 7 of the Crawl.

£15.20 for 4 pints not too bad for the area.

Another gastro pub but this one is not so bad. Beer was good and the place had a OK feel about it.

One of the better pubs of the night. Definitely better then the Powder Keg Diplomacy, which I walked out of..,.what were they thinkin?

Visited it as a new Beer Guide entry, but instantly remembered the pub from 3 years ago as Freemasons. Typical middle-income London open plan, open-kitchen pub, but with a fair bit of character. Significant refurbishment (?) underway, and welcome at 4pm distinctly muted, but the Wandle was sbove average (although I think at 1.90 a half it ought to have been).

A good 'locals' boozer - good beer, attentive staff, friendly crowd.

Great beer, tasty food and superb service. Has become the only pub to in the area. Highly recommended. For the record, the chips were awesome.
donkeywalloper - 8 Jan 2011 14:45
Very over-rated place. Noisy as hell, lighting brighter than Piccadilly Circus and indifferent and very expensive food including awful, soggy chips. Staff are over-friendly and severely lacking in service quality. Not a pleasant experience.

A gastropub with a continental feel to it. On my Saturday evening visit, most people were there to drink. Hogsback Advent Ale and Sambrook Wandle & Powerhouse Porter were the 3 real ales. Aspalls is the draught cider. I plumped for the Cidre Breton from a bottle. With all tables taken, the atmosphere was good with conversation ruling within the various groups. Service was quick and friendly. Spanish film posters on the walls provided an unusual touch. A fairly pleasant experience.

Warning! Seeing this pub was in the new 2011 Good Beer Guide decided to give it a try yesterday afternoon about 2 pm but found it closed, contrary to the guide which shows it as open all day!

Been frequenting The Roundhouse for the past year and am yet to be disappointed by the food or service. Am leaving the UK in August..... I will miss this place.
mlhandy88 - 8 Jun 2010 17:40
Went here last night, food was exceptionally good for pub grub. Wouldn't have been out of place in a decent restaurant. Friendly service and a good range of beers. Possibly on the expensive side, but this is Clapham...

Liked it better as the Freemason's, sadly they got rid of the slightly wacky mirror art and replaced with boring memorabilia/posters... rest of it seems to be much the same...

I always get annoyed here by the waiter/esses and managers/owner standing around when people are lining up at the bar. They generally have one designated bar guy (who is very friendly and efficient). Is it too much to expect that they could serve at the bar and help the poor bar guy out when needed ? Esp. when they are obviously doing nothing else? These are the things that make the difference...

Good selection of beer and the food is quite good ...

A central curved bar dominates the space, the area around has a number of tables, all different in style and with non-matching chairs again all of a different style to each other. I assume this to be some sort of design statement but I don't get it personally. A slightly raised area is to one side of the bar. Fairly minimalist decor, cream walls, white ceiling and black wood, foreign film posters and the such. The main entrance area may have some original glazing, and still features the mosaic tiled step with the original name "The Freemasons" picked out. A not unpleasant low key Ska music was playing at background volume. I suspect the pub has gone a bit gastro(?) nevertheless it was v quiet mid afternoon and no signs of food/people finishing lunches.
Three handpumps, Everards Original, Sambrooks Wandle and Westons Organic Cider. The Wandle had a slight haze but was drinkable. Served in an old dimple pot.
An unusual pub, probably marketed at local trendies but not really my sort of place really, far too mucked about with.

This pub has been taken over and is now known as the 'Roundhouse'.

It's really not a bad little place. The staff are friendly and keen to chat, they serve locally brewed real ale (Sam Brooks) and the food is great (although perhaps slightly expensive).

It's a bit tucked away but worth seeking out, particularly for the quiz which is a great laugh. Oh, and you can reserve a table too if you're heading down for a session.

Well done Roundhouse, a smooth transition - now keep it up!!

Thumbs Up, London Calling.

Large and comfortable pub on the edge of Wandsworth Common, Everards Tiger was only average unfortunately as the service was fine. The 1000th pub on my visited list so I'm pleased it was at least ok.
rainlight - 23 Jun 2008 19:44
Very good pub. Drinks selection not bad, food pretty good. And great bar staff (particularly the aussie girls behind the bar!!!!).
southwest11 - 13 Jun 2008 12:28
Quite nice looking foodie pub, friendly staff, Tiger @1.70 a half was pretty good but almost Cambridge prices ! Liked the tables.
mtaylor40 - 11 Apr 2008 23:04
Great pub, but tend to avoid it when it gets crammed (Thurs/Friday nights). Food is great, nice choice of drinks, and staff have always been really friendly and happy to chat.
b_girl7 - 4 Mar 2008 18:00
Nice beers, but I rarely get given a full pint. I may stop coming here after being made to feel so unwelcome by the bar staff last night: first we were asked not to sit at certain tables because they had been cleared, then we were rushed out at closing time.
JamesLovesBeer - 5 Nov 2007 18:46
I watched the football here on Saturday afternoon. Enough seats available and the arrangement of the screens (multiple sets spread around the pub) makes for a better experience for sport watchers and none-watchers. As others have commented the bar staff are very much on-the-ball. One lady in particular seems to serve and coach at the same time.
NorthernBloke - 16 Apr 2007 14:58
Nice Pint Of Landlord , And The Food Looked Amazing But Pricey.8/10
fat_beer_badger - 11 Jan 2007 16:12
I've been frequenting this pub for a long while now and 99% of the time, it's been great...apart from when it's rammed to the rafters, i.e. most Thursday/Friday nights.

Great staff, great food (we had an Xmas lunch for 20 people a couple of years ago) and just down the road from my parents, so I can drown my sorrows after a visit to the olds.
scorchio75 - 21 Dec 2006 12:38
Not too much here to fault. Good beers, good wine list, good service and good food. Only minor gripe is the portions are a bit small. Staff are great and very efficient.

Nice boozer!!
misterwoppit - 3 Nov 2006 15:04
good food, good selection of continental lager/bitter (Timothy Taylor), tend to have a good time when I come here. Staff and management are also very attentive. If you dont get a table it can get a bit cramped but not too much of a problem. Good for Sunday lunch.
big_dog - 19 Apr 2006 12:27
I must say, during the regrettable period I lived south of the river (I was new to London, ok? I got out quick) I came here a couple of times and cannot see what the fuss is about. Pretty indentikit uninspiring gastropub. Not much else to say. For anyone who doesn't live in the area, I wouldn't advise you to go out of your way. The high rating this place is receiving is frankly puzzling. Sorry.
anonymous - 8 Mar 2006 16:56
I adore this place - the food is fantastic (decent gastro food though, so decent gastro prices) and they have fab selection of beer. Wine list that will impress your mum when she comes to stay in 'filthy london' too. Have to strongly disagree with the comment from "rlm' posted in December. Its not miles away from public transport.

6 mintues up the road (which is visible from the pub) you can get onto Clapham Junction overland trains or buses that will take you to Clapham Common and further. Its really easy, and like most decent pubs in London, requires a little effort to get there! Perhaps RLM should enjoy the pubs in the north and leave this glorious place for us poor poor southerners.
icklejaney - 8 Mar 2006 16:40
Visited for the first time last night and was really impressed. The beer (including draft fruit beer) was good, table service (yes, table service) excellently attentive and the overall atmosphere warm and friendly. We didn't eat, but judging by the large number of people the staff were having to turn away and the aromas coming from the kitchen, the food looks good.

Will definitely be visiting again - it's only a 10 minute walk from Clapham Junction so easily on our route home.
kenny_the_keg - 4 Feb 2006 18:36
If you are forced to go south of the river, then the Freemasons is not a bad place to go. The food is pretty good and the veggie selection is nice. Sometimes they have a dj,eg Groove Armada! It is a bit of a nightmare to get home from though especially if you have to go north as it is miles from proper public transport and a walk to get either to the British Rail station or on a decent bus route. If you drive or live here though, it is quite a nice pub.
rlm - 18 Dec 2005 17:44
Am extremely upset as we had to move away from St John's Hill and we had got to know the Freemason's as one of the finest warmest and most welcoming pubs around. All of the staff are top and yes, curly haired waiter's fantastic
jimlefevre - 13 Dec 2005 15:08
Excellent Sunday lunch - finally got to eat there as we remembered to book a table the day before. Roast beef was best I have had in any pub. Chocolate brownie was very chocolatie. Book it!
anonymous - 30 Oct 2005 19:05
Very nice pub which brings back a lot of memories as it's opposite my old school. Pleanty of variety on tap for all kind of drinkers, as well as some intresting ales for the area. Recommended!
anonymous - 1 Jul 2005 13:46
Everytime I visit I am more and more impressed. The only place I've eaten where I have liked every single main course available. Puts other so called gastro pubs to shame. I turned up once at 3o'clock expecting to be told the kitchen was closed but recieved a great meal with none of the grumbling and 'sorry thats run out' you get at many places.
Wine very good value and good selection of beers. So impressed i'm taking my company there for our christmas meal. I recommend this pub to anyone and suggest a plate of houmos while having a beer. To die for.

I love it.
I am very pleased it is my local - great food and wine and there is always a great atmosphere.
Love the waiter with the curly hair too!!
Jo - 2 Sep 2004 17:20
Really great local, good food, beer and wines. Tim the manager is a great guy. Would recomend it any day.
Dan - 15 Jul 2004 17:29
Very friendly staff, lots of space and the food is great. They also didn't question my strange drink request or ask me to repeat it 3 x like some other places.
Chris - 12 Jul 2004 15:51
Fantastic wine list, amazing food and really good value - one of the best pubs in London.
Jon - 6 Apr 2004 19:31
this is a great foodie pub with loads of comfy armchairs and never too crowded
