Pleased to say pub is now back on form. Amy, used to be barmaid her, has now taken over management and, despite the problems of opening due to C/virus, has now brought back the beer quality and range that we used to enjoy.

Visited a few weeks before 'Aztecgoat' and had the same experience.
Slightly less choice of beer and food put on hold for at least a couple of months.
Might return if hearing positive news.

Oh dear! Change in management, beer choice and quality have fallen, plus no food. No longer first port of call in the Old Town I fear.

I never thought I would say this - what a great Greene King pub!
At least eight real ales, mostly from breweries other than GK.
Oldershaw's Heavenly Blonde was superb, as was Leighton Buzzard's Cuckoo.
A couple of porters were also available.
Good food and friendly staff.

Whilst I hadn't been drinking in Stevenage for almost 5 years, the Chequers must surely rate as one of the best pubs in town. It was busy on our Saturday evening visit. The Wales rugby game was on at quite a loud volume. The ale selection was certainly good - Greene King IPA, XX Mild & Abbot, Oakham Bishop's Farewell, Morland Original, Mad Squirrel Hopfest, Brentwood Chocwork Orange, Leighton Buzzard Cuckoo & Reunion Talwar. In addition, at the side of the bar were 5 handpulls for cider. 4 were clipped - Weston's Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig & Saxby's Traditional & Rhubarb Cider. I went for the Rhubarb, which was a new one for me. Decent place.

Beer generally good although there is alot of Haresfoot which is an acquired taste in my view. Usually got about 6/7 beers on, food is good, staff are excellent, quiz nights once a month, screens for the rugby/football etc. Complimentary snacks at half time during rugby and the quizs. The volume is turned down when just regular TV being shown - fine by me. This place has been pulled up by its bootstraps and is now a good place to visit.

Just started their first beer festival last night. excellent range of interesting beers in A1 condition.

As this pub is across the road from the cricket ground , I suggest potential
customers wear a rugby jersey, and cricket pads to make sure they get served.

Another Hertfordshire pub which thinks its a private club.

Pie night on Thursdays, this week was steak and onion or chicken/bacon/leek, veggie was cabbage and mashed pots. £7.95, good portions, hot and very tastey and good value. Beers were also on good form including a limited brew by Oakham, The Racketeer.

10 mins from station in opposite direction to football ground, but completely worth the detour. Friendly welcoming service, lovely pub with 9 real ales on last Tuesday . Good value of food also and was so impressed I walked back after game for another visit. Excellent.

New management taken over 7 weeks ago. Popped in on hearing good reports and found 8 real beers on, I tried 6 and all were in excellent form. A couple friends had small lunch which was just what they were after, all agreed beer was superb.
New mangement were available and chatty, comfortable surroundings, daily/local papers for punters to read. Will defo be coming back here and I really hope they make this a success.
Its actually a real challenger for Our Mutual Friend, although on other side of town, its worth the trip.

Really impressed with choice of ales on. Only two from Gree*e Ki*g.
All on good form, hope new Landlord is successful.

Bizarrely at 12.45 on a Monday lunchtime, six of us were standing outside this pub (it's supposed to open at midday) trying to ttract the attention of the landlord so he could let us in. But to no avail. We came back later to find a refurbished pub with, I think, 6 real ales on. The beers were good, the pub's comfortable, but a bit more attention to the customers wouldn't go amiss.

Although the beer quality is generally good to very good this pub is let down by the staff at times. This afternoon the barmaid spent most of her time sitting at a table with her friends, only going back behind the bar when a customer needed serving. Most unprofessional, surely she could have been tidying, cleaning glasses etc when not actually serving?

What would be a reasonable pub elsewhere is quite easily best pub in Stevenage. Eight ales on including 2 each from Herts brewers (Tring and Buntingford).

VASTLY IMPROVED! Since my previous visit the Chequers is now a real ale pub with a very impressive selection. I like the decorations themed around Stevenage and the bar staff knew their beer too. My new favourite pub in Stevenage.

This pub has just re opened after an extensive refurbishment. I was amazed at the transformation as it is definately somewhere you would take your partner for a nice social drink. Unlike most Stevenage pubs is has a very cosy atmosphere with 10 real Ales on tap and some lagers I'd not heard of such as Noble and Estrella.
The staff were also very friendly.
The downside no Sky Sports, but I did feel very comfortable on my own.

Also did I mention the 10 Real Ales !!!!!

Definately my new favourite pub in the Old Town, will be popping back for some food soon.

First pub you pass on the way into the old town from the Holiday Inn.

Go in.

The bar person is engrossed in the Tennis.

One of the regulars points out that she has a customer

She manages to server me a san miguel and a packet of quavers without taking her eyes of the screen. Money is exchanged and change is provided.

Should have told her it was a twenty.

My Dad's favourite pub since he was a teenager, we still stop by from time to time when in town. He likes the Greene King IPA but I find the choice of ales a bit limited. Friendly enough boozer just a bit too much clutter on the walls these days.

Well, the demise of this pub from the heady days of Paul Cowley,to the busy and great days of Ron and Sue, has now,via a few dodgy ideas in my opinion from Landlord/Landladies to get folk through the door...has now reached rock bottom for...ladies and gentlemen i give you......THE WORLDS RUDEST LANDLANDY!!!
Brings a new dimension to word MOAN for she is premiership material...
Request such as "can we have the juke box on?"
"have you any Pork Scratchings?"
"any Newcastle Brown Ale"

these humble requests are met with the distain and rudeness which leaves one wondering if she managed to sue them (the charm school...that is!). Couple this with the arogant barflies(all 2 of them) who in truth probably spend no more that a tenner between them but think its gives them the right to Lord it up..pass comment and generally create a dodgy atmosphere then you have the complete pub from somewhere what has rubbish pubs in (erm....Southend mebee...or Blackpool p'raps!)
So as the old saying goes....next time your passing this pub....keep walking (to The Coach maybe...or Lorn!)

Brilliant pub both lunchtimes and evenings. True homecooked food - great hosts Sue & Bill. I always drag friends in here for a pint enroute to one of the many curry houses in the old town. See if you can spot the police hat on the shelf above the bar :)

Nice pub with friendly staff. Never had any trouble in here, unlike other Stevenage pubs. Beer is nice. Pub is cosy on quiet nights and good atmosphere on busy nights.
meatballuk - 2 Jan 2007 23:07
Bit cliquey this place, prices well out of step with other pubs in the Old Town.
jim_price - 18 Apr 2006 17:06
Proper local, traditional style pub.
Friendly atmosphere with no yobs.
Beer is slightly more than others in the area, but its worth paying the extra for the environment!
Not too sure about the Landlord???!!! Moany ol codger!
Only joking Ronnie!
Good Quiz on Thursday, good live entertainment most Saturdays,
PS Excellent bar staff on a Wednesday!

I used to know the owners of this pub and have stayed in it before in the 1990s. Nice interior, though has a strict policy on under 21s which actually is probably not a bad idea. Friendly atmosphere.

Nice traditional style pub however the drinks are on the expensive side. They do a quiz and curry night Thursdays which is amazing value at 1 per person and includes a really nice curry with rice and bread! The quiz was quite hard though only 19/50 sadly and there was me thinking I was clever...!
