Elterwater!

Wonderful pub with accommodation in the beautiful Elterester valley. Outside seating, small bar and additional area to drink in the rear. Several local ales on cask, always well kept. The menu is varied and food is excellent. Fish and chips, or Cumberland sausage or the pies are all fantastic.

Lovely pub in great location. Sadly only had time for one pint, but will return!

Found this pub walking back to Langdale - great selection of ales, busy, but seating available outside if weather good - recommended.

went in for a pint early on Saturday evening. pretty busy. decent selection of ales, including two brewed just for the pub from local breweries. a proper old fashioned lakeland boozer!

Wonderful pub. Friendly staff and great atmosphere in the small bar. Six or seven beers on - all well kept. Eden Gold and Legendary Langdale were particularly good. We had lunch once and enjoyed cumberland sausage rolls. Evening meals looked very good.

This pub is a classic. Picture perfect.

Great location and always good beer. Of course charges are high but it is always busy and a very pleasant place to stop.

Excellent outside seating area.

For the stranger to Lakeland, one of the must visit pubs.

Superb. Stayed in Elterwater and went in every night. Yes the food is on the more expensive side but it's very good. The service is incredibly friendly and they are welcoming of dogs. It can get busy but everyone mucks along together and that's the attraction.

Nice olde worlde pub in a prime position serving good beer and reasonable food. However, the rooms are at best average and overpriced and would choose the 3 Shires Inn nearby at Little Langdale to stopover.

Great pub to visit after a country walk. Very cramped inside, a few small rooms, seems to be quite an old building and you have to duck to get into the john. Probaly built when the average height of a man was around 5 foot. A few real ales, serves a decent sandwich, plenty of tables outside. If these are full, and it is dry, you can always take your pint across the road, like many do, and sit on the grass on the small village green.

Have stayed here a couple of times - always good beers on here, and excellent in good weather as you can sit outside. Small inside though, so unless you've booked you might be in for a cramped wait! Food is quite expensive.

This is a really good country pub in a beautiful location in perhaps the most popular and expensive part of Lakeland; the timeshare mecca, haunt of the movie stars. I was there when it was incredibly busy during the half term holidays on a hot day. It was packed. Despite this the food was very good, the service efficient and the beer in excellent condition.

Several Lakeland micobeers on hand pumps. The bar is tiny as is the pub. I had to wait quite a while to get to the bar as there was only room for one barman to serve beer and take food orders. Despite this, he was helpful, polite and efficient. The food arrived without any undue wait. A very good experience and I will go back any time I am in the area so impressed was I.

Of course prices are on the high side, with beer at 2.60 - 2.90 a pint, but this is the Lakes National Park and it's the going rate. If you want good no nonsense food and beer you won't do better. Cheaper beer and food is available at some excellent establishments on the periphery of the Lakes and they deserve your patronage as they are all in danger of closing.

Fabulous pub. Great choice of ale all in excellent condition - the Coniston Brewery's Britannia Ale is especially good. The food is a little pricey but absolutely excellent (I had roast duck with black pudding - delicious!).

Whilst staying nearby, we popped in here several times over a few days and loved the place. A nice place to stop off on the way back to your cottage after a long day's walk for a read of the paper and a well-earned pint. All the beers served well and the food that we had was damn good too. The Sunday quiz was worth a go - came joint third (along with half of the pub) in the end.

Still good for its wide variety of well-kept beer, but the bar service is pathetic even when it isn't busy (which isn't often) and the prices for snacks are a disgrace - a small ham sandwich with one cherry tomato and a few pathetic salad leaves was 4.20, but probably cost well under 1 to make.

My wife and I were lucky enough to book a table for Christmas Day lunch. What a truly wonderful meal, served by friendly and attentive staff, and washed down with great beer. Well done to all. They were good enough to 'squeeze us in' at rather short notice, which was really appreciated.
The last time I visited Elterwater was in 1986 with my father, so it was wonderful to be back.

What a wonderful pub this is, whenever Iam in Langdale I just have to pop in for a pint or two of Conistone Bluebird(in fact the first pint of this excellent ale was had here) the whole place is just fantastic,go there on a cold winters day after a walk in the hills, sit next to the fire and enjoy a pint in one of the Lakes finest pubs.If the Britannia has a drawback its because it is so popular and it can be hard to find somewhere to sit,try the tiny bar round to the left as you face the building you can often find a pew there when there is standing room only in the main bar.

A fantastic pub out of season on an Autumn evening. After a week sampling the staggering collection of draught ales, we plucked up the courage to eat local trout from the excellent menu, and ate in the front bar. It was good quality food, perfectly timed. I also recommend the fine Seabrookes crisps, which with a pint of Coniston Bluebird, is a perfect end to a day on the hills. Why, oh why, did I move South.

Another excellent Lakeland pub, with a good selection of ales always on, and very good food. Always busy in peak season, but always a treat to eat and drink after walking over Loughrigg Fell from Ambleside.

Soup and chips sat outside on New Year's day can't be beaten!

I adore this pub. A great start route for any number of wonderful circular routes in the hills and Langdale Valleys ... and an even better place to come back to! Always a good selection of ales, and the bar food is OK (actually the chicken curry on a baked spud eaten after popping up Silver How on a bitterly cold January day may be the nicest thing I've ever eaten!!). In the summer it can get a bit crowded with queues at the bar, but sitting outside in the sun with a pint is a particular pleasure at this pub.
llamafarmer - 5 Nov 2007 18:48
Agree with everything posted previously. Fortunately the weather was good so sitting outside was a good option. The inside does indeed get crowded at lunchtime.

One tip Gents. If you feel called to "take a seat don't leave this until the last minute. There is only one throne available which is unisex.
twineyboy - 27 Oct 2007 12:43
Fantastic, idyllic location.Gets very busy with queue for the bar snaking its way out of the door.Fine ales including Coniston Bluebird and a couple of interesting guests.Good outdoor seating area overlooking the green and the outstanding surrounding area.

Had an excellent meal with very good beer here recently. Lovely location. Bit cramped and crowded in front bar and service can be a bit slow.

This pub featured on the front cover of Camras Good Beer Guide a couple of years ago and, in summer, it is a lovely place to sit outside. Things are a bit less good inside. Although theres a dining room, drinkers are squeezed into a strangely blind back room, a corridor or the cosier front bar, though this is often divided by a queue of people waiting for drinks. Theres a fire but the best place to sit is out of the way in the window. I was a bit surprised to find the fire unlit and the Hawkshead Red in poor condition a couple of days before New Years Eve but things were better on New Years Eve itself.

Nice pub but and good selection of beer but don't think they had much local beers on when I went. Think they had Landlord, London Pride and can't remember the other two. I agree that the prices are steep, I think 2.70 to 2.90 a pint. Worth a look all the same
nonecker - 26 Nov 2006 21:24
good beer, great food and a bowling green
Rammy_Tupper - 31 Jul 2006 21:58
A great pub with really excellent real ales and impressive food. I nearly fainted at the guest beer prices but I guess it's all about the location. Besides, there are plenty of rubbish places round these parts that charge similar prices and aren't in the same league.
Terry_W - 22 Nov 2005 22:06
Excellent pub but quite small so can be difficult to get a table. Good food as well. Very nice to sit outside when the weather's good
adrianstevenson - 1 Sep 2005 12:27
One of the greats but it can be horrendous trying to get served at busy periods. An awful lot of Lakeland pubs rely too heavily during the busy Summer season on willing and charming but woefully inexperienced students - usually from Australia. Those old convicts have a lot to answer for!

we have used The Britannia Inn for over 20 years and it is better than ever now just how many pubs can you say that about and mean it. The food is good the service first rate it is every thing a real pub should be real beer real food and most of all full of real people
colin worth - 26 Apr 2004 20:25
This is a biscuit lid pub, one of those ideal places of great beauty and peace. There is a rapidly changing selection of real ales, and lovely food. In the cold seasons there's log fires. If you visit Cumbria, this is a pub not to miss.
