Such a shame whats happening to pubs in our area
tottenhamsean - 4 Jan 2016 15:30
Odd place. Last time I went there someone was outside in the back urinating on the caged canaries and caged birds in the garden. Crummy area and drugs about. Also as one person mentioned the gents is a sea of urine.
brianbrain - 26 Feb 2012 08:28
Hugely put off by the disgustingly aggressive bouncers who hang around outside this venue to intimidate everyone nearby. Give a wide berth.
discerning28 - 11 Feb 2012 01:02
Landlord a nutter
bailiffs - 22 Nov 2011 15:54
The jollys is one of the cleanest pub in wood green and bar staff are vcery polite but if u are rude to them well im afraid they can give it back so for all those who dont like attitude of bar staff dnt give it and you wont get it back trouble with wood green everyone thinks they are gangsters.having come from that part of london i know what people are about. so to knock a pub that is so clean well mannered and good entertainment as well as good food and a landlord who is always giving it u outsiders with a problem if u cant afford to drink in the place stay out go where most pub in the area stink pissy and u get served in dirty glasses and as for drug and smelling skunk u can smell that every where in wood green and drugs is worldwide so for kelly who moaned is prob a country bumkin living a shelterd life well news for your in london now desal wiv it or piss off
cheshunt - 18 Nov 2011 00:23
this pub has several problems. firstly the prices are well over the top. This is N22, not the west end. Bar staff can be a bit odd one in particular little blonde, got far too much attitude.cheer up love or find another career.
Drugs. Place is full of dealers on the weekends you can smell the skunk walking past the beer garden. Surprised the place still has its license.
Toilets. male toilet has leak under the trough and the place is saturated in urine, take notice it may be worth hiring out wellies for the customers.
Disgusting.

kellysown - 2 Aug 2011 15:26
OMG what a fantastic night we had in the jollys last night .
the manager steve was in such a bubbley mood that he had the whole place rocking . steve you are the best thing that has happen to this pub thank you so much . i have never had such a night where my head could not lift off my pillow since i was a teenager, u really brought my youth years back to life that night . the music was great and what a great crowed you had in . nice to see hus is back behind the bar again . only one other thing steve u should have been drinking with us ! how did u get that place rocking when u where soba lol . good guy u are mate .
localpubman - 1 May 2011 14:24
The jollys is nothing like the comments that the brave outsidein made against the pub and steve . infact in all the years steve has been the landlord of the pub i have never seen him sit in his own pub , he is hardly ever in his pub other than weekends doing the doors .

yes the place is at times a bit live at the week ends with the boom boom music but its wood green and if that is what is wanted then of course they will play that sort of music .

steve you do no that the music is not my cuppa tea too on friday but you do a good job mate in keeping out most of thr wood green rif raf that likes that soet of music . dont let some spine less person like outsidein worry you mate they have no idear how much love and passion you have given this pub over the last 6 years . we as your daily regulars love how you manage and keep your pub . very clean and tidy any one who goes in their can see that .
most best kept pub in wood green same as the lord nelson is too .

localpubman - 7 Apr 2011 02:01
Oh and its alittle obivous that either the landlord or a member of staff is the one giving reviews under the name "localpubman"
outsidein - 1 Apr 2011 18:54
Well i really can not see how people can give this place a good review ?? I've been going there since around 1996 and its been one of the worst looking pubs since then... the smell the decor and the general state of the place is crap ! the toilets are worst i've ever seen in a pub, i trained for my swimming badges in there !! basically its the kinda place you wipe your feet on the way out ! Drink prices are high and compared to the service not worth it !! Fri & Sat the place turns into a plastic 'Gangsters' hive with hooded knobs standing around looking for trouble listening to the same selection of music over and over again.... If you like seeing fight bewteen crack heads and drunk wanna bes go and youll be happy !! theres always a fight of some kind here.. The staff are unfriendly and give the impression they stick to friends and family and will serve general public if need be.. The Boss 'steve' i think is a weird guy he sits there basically sexualy assualting people with his eyes rubbing his self and all sorts ?? If you look at the type of music played on fri and sat you we see why this place has turned into a Chav/yardie mess hole!!! oh yeah i once got soaked because the sink fell of the wall ! and the mirror was faling of the wall in pieces ... im not being picky or against the place im being what i think is honest.!
outsidein - 1 Apr 2011 18:52
this pub is the best... :)
localpubman - 17 Mar 2011 22:55
I would like to apologise for my previous post. What I said was down to having a bad day. What happened that night was merely horse-play, I was in too stroppy a mood to realise this. Steve the landlord is an excellent host and makes sure everyone feels welcome. I am sorry if I offended anyone.
fuzzydunlop - 18 Feb 2011 05:39

The Jollys is a great place to be in .
steve the landlord is a great guy .
and has been the longest govonor here so far (6years counts for a lot )

come and check out the jollys its a warm and welcoming place to be .

yes sometimes it can take awhile to get served but only of a weekend as its so busy . the bar staff work hard and tolrate no nonsence .

The food is great too . your a good fella steve !
localpubman - 14 Feb 2011 02:16
I've been an on/off punter in this pub for twenty years. And I have to say these days, it's absolutely shocking. I can't comment on the ales as I'm strictly a lager / cider/ spirits man (don't judge me!). The fact that I don't go into this pub as often as I used to has reflected on the level of service I get when I do. The landlord has recently come out as gay. I don't have a problem with this, but when I approach the bar (this past evening) and said landlord starts rubbing my chest and acting in an inappropriate manner, then, funnily enough, I do. I will still visit this pub as I have friends who drink here regularly (albeit on quieter nights). But I now consider this a NON-regular.
fuzzydunlop - 11 Feb 2011 04:10
The Snifter was half right - the (loud) regulars still block most of the bar - and the staff ignore newcomers to serve regulars who arrive after. Has Sky. Gave up waiting though and took my trade elsewhere.
oftenscore6 - 7 Feb 2011 00:03
The DJ who plays the music in the Jolly Anglers has posted three identical reviews here, all saying how good she is! She isn't! Nobody dances on the dancefloor when DJ Dee is playing at the Jolly Anglers because she plays the same BORING sounds all night! As another reviewer called Ellie points out in her review:
'' We want more rock!!!!''

Or at least some tracks some of us recognise...
goodtimeguy - 17 Dec 2010 18:13
I agree with PlumbAl, this place has always had potential and has had some good managers over the years. I know this place in the early 90's. Went in the other day and the place looks basically the same. Tried a pint of GK IPA and it was ok. I like the place. Yeah, it can get a bit 'iffy' late at night. Saw a fight in here once at 11:15 am!! That's got to be some sort of record!!!! 5/10 from me.
wolvesfan - 2 Sep 2010 14:06
This place has potential. If it were to go up market a bit, put on a bigger range of real ales and publicize itself it could pull the real ale punters in. It has (an) atmosphere that could be built on to turn it into a decent boozer if only there is the will. A big plus point is the food which is excellent.
PlumbAl - 24 Jul 2010 18:38
As is usual there is a band of regulars sitting at the bar blocking geting served but there is stlll plenty of bar space left. The regulars glare at you for a while biut soon return to chating to each other and ignore you. The beer was fine and on the whole the place seemed quite friendly.
TheSnifter - 7 Jul 2010 22:33
Not too bad in the early evening but can get a bit dodgy late on at a weekend. Beer (IPA & Speckled Hen) are well kept and the Thai food is quite good. Also the bloody football is kept down unless there is a bit of a crowd in.
HeroKelly - 22 Jun 2010 21:10
Bloody hell. This was my local for around ten years when I lived in Wood Green. Reading some of these comments makes me feel quite sad. It was a very friendly pub in the 90's with some great regulars and some very good managers. True the toilets were never that good but the rest of the pub, especially the service, was great.

RIP.
arty_morty - 14 May 2010 16:41
First impresion: Very sad. From the outside it looked very ok, but once you got in the mood just sorta dropped. Confused and tired staff, toilets messed up and the clientelle looked ready for bed. Ill go there again if im totally hammered as a last resort, but not to get in a partymood.
bartendergirl - 28 Sep 2009 23:10
I think that as a customer I have right to comment. I felt very uncomfortable and unhappy at that pub. I went there with my sister and her husbend one Wednesday afternoon and instead of havin a nice pint, I had some unnecessary arguments with one of the bar mates who was only one there. I often go to that pub and I never come across such a disappointment. I was totally ignored by young, English, short blond girl who claimed to be a manager (I only gave that description because there is a mixture of Polish & English stuff who is often very nice and polite) and I was also told that Im being rude by asking if she works here and being inpatient after 10 min waiting to be served while she was having a long conversation with the other customer who I presume was her boyfriend. She never said: Ill be with you in a min or could you please just wait, anything to make me understand that she actually going to serve me eventually. After 1 min of her talking really loud and over me, she refused to sell me that beer.
I thought that I was dealing with professionals but I think that I was wrong. I also think that in current economic climate you need to be very careful of what and how you say to the customer and as a manager (who she claimed she was) you need to know how to deal with that kind of situations and be always polite. And: as they say: customer is always right!
PREETTYPAULA - 24 Sep 2009 16:39
been in there twice now at the weekednd, not really my cup of tea music wise, but a good laugh
walthamstowgooner - 8 Sep 2009 12:48
fun pub, good music, efficient bar staff, clientelle varied. bad bad bouncers. they were basically just a bunch of thugs who seemed to get off on bullying customers then refusing them entry. one in particular should be sacked.
partyboy02 - 2 Aug 2009 04:33
ok pub, clientele all appear to be drug addicts
ppworth79 - 16 Jul 2009 17:32
I was disgusted by the behaviour of the doormen. One in particular who seemed to be head doorman was just vile. Bullying customers, egging others on to fight each other and being quite over the top with females. I even heard somone ask him to remove someone from the pub for a fee of 20 to which he seemed to oblige. Inside the staff were friendly as were the punters. I think management give this animal to much control. DISGRACEFUL
thesnowgirl - 11 Jul 2009 14:36
just vile.

The Jolly Anglers is a funky and vibrant bar with Dj dee playing the best in R&B, Funky-house and Commercial Hits every Friday while quenching your thirst with a wide renge of drinks.

Free admission from 9.00pm - 3.00am

By the way, Friday nights are not heavy metal and rock night anymore!!!

Dj_Dee - 19 Feb 2009 15:58
Not a bad pub. I had a softie, but I thought this did have real ale (GK) when I visited the other day - I could have been misled by the GK frontage though. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed, with a very mixed crowd of locals quietly watching the football, chatting, or playing pool according to preference.
grecian - 12 Jan 2009 10:36
Nice enough, but uncomfortably loud when the DJ's on. The music's ok but there's just too much volume.
LufthansaTerminal - 31 Dec 2008 18:41
This is two pubs in one with the downstairs area to the rear with the two pool tables being for the local Wood Green tossers who love nothing more than arguing over money, threatening each other and generally being intimidating to anyone who dares to go to the toilet. On the other hand, the street level front of the pub is much better as it is frequented by an older more sensible crowd who have gone out to relax and have a good time.

There are plenty of plasma screens for the showing of all things sport and there is also a dartboard in the middle of the pub, thankfully not in the kids section downstairs.

I spotted no real ale, but plenty of the usual suspect lager, Strongbow and Guinness.

Apart from the lack of real ale and the local rude boys this is a reasonable pub for Wood Green.

Excellent place for a drink - one of the few decent Wood Green pubs.
ZymurgyX - 22 Oct 2008 16:47
Not a good atmosphere in here on a pre bank holiday Sunday evening. Vaguely threatening.
hotrods - 27 Aug 2007 08:54
too loud, but friendly landlord, and always busy.
Mattclary - 19 Aug 2007 21:52
Much better than the other pubs in the area. They did a bit of a botched job on the decorating though, looks like Mr Argos came to lay down the flooring. Not sure about the fabrics used either.
anonymous - 4 Aug 2007 14:35
One of the best pubs in Wood Green. Good DJ on a Friday but its full of students.
Cockney_Hammer - 28 Jul 2007 17:23
Used to be a regular in here but stayed away for a while when it was going down the pan. A recent visit was heartening as the pub looks so much better and the staff and customers seem to be friendly like in the old days. Having said that, when the footie match started, the place flooded with some really dodgy looking characters who seemed more intent on watching each other rather than the footie - very interesting to say the least.
anonymous - 26 May 2007 00:15
Guinness is superb, was in here yesterday afternoon
tottenhamsean - 13 Mar 2007 08:59
Just popped in for Sunday lunch. Food was pretty decent - for pub fare - and reasonably priced. No real ale, unfortunately, had to make do with Guinness. Bar staff seemed friendly. I've been in a lot worse places than this, but don't think I will be rushing to come back.
Crow_Valley - 29 Oct 2006 16:11
Great staff, great entertainment, great beer, spirits etc at decent prices, BRILLIANT food, clean toilets, air conditioning, professionaly managed.
Surrounding pubs could learn a thing or two from here.
anonymous - 20 Jun 2006 13:38
I love this pub. Everyone who works there are great. Its gotta be the only pub in wood green where some members of the barstaff (steve and babs I'm talking to you) get up on tables and dance. It's true!!!
Fri and sat nights are amazing, as always, with the resident dj Howard marks. (just don't ask for any britney spears or R'n'B) Monday nights are such a laugh with Joey and Kitch getting people up to show off their talents for open mic night. Thursdays are wikid as Mandy encourages people to get up and sing (mandy is sooo cool) and the boss, Steve, is such a nice guy. He's really turned the pub around. You feel so welcome and the food during the week is unbelieveable Christina really knows how to cook. If you want a great night out anytime of the week and you're stuck in wood green, go to the anglers. Its like a real life cheers I promise you.
girly69 - 8 Jun 2006 21:53
It is much better since the refit. There's a friendly atmosphere and it's clean (for a pub). Howard's DJing is great and there's games machines to play. The staff are great and you never wait long to be served.
tamatisk - 7 Jun 2006 20:37
I love this pub, it is my local even though i live in Enfield!! The staff are friendly, the regulars are friendly and it has a great atmosphere. There is the world cup being shown. Two fruit machines, a quiz machine, two pool tables and a jukebox. It has everything you could wish. plus several bunny rabbits in the beer garden!!

The evenings are great too. Mondays are fabulous for students as it has an open mike night and thursdays has karaoke. Again another fun night. Friday's has a rock and metal night, where Howard is brilliant and plays requests. If you love rock and metal...its the place to be. To top it off, Saturday's has Howard again, where he plays anything you wish, with a great selection of music.

Basically, if your up for a laugh, this is the pub to go.
hollylianne - 7 Jun 2006 20:36
Went there again on Friday. Very very nice, efficient and friendly staff, very clean, a pub you can breath in! Although i am a smoker, i hate smoke filled pubs. Anglers is very roomy with air conditioning. No silly little people wanting to rip your head off after sinking 3 pints!!.
People of all ages there who know how to have a great night without causing trouble. This pub is extremely well managed, and also has polite door staff who keep the idiots out. I've highly recommended it to my friends. Mini-cab station directly opposite, which is handy! I can see it fast becomming my local!...By far, the best pub in Wood Green. Dont just take my word for it, go check it out!
anonymous - 6 Jun 2006 09:50
I love the Jolly Anglers! Late license, good door staff (keeping the teenagers from the Nelson out) and nice atmosphere. They play some really good music and the bar staff are always friendly. Good mix of people in there so you never get bored.
stripytiger - 20 May 2006 16:42
great little pub, love the karaoke wiv joey he is a great guy.
drumandmonkeyfan - 22 Mar 2006 15:24
It's been done up and in alot more modern style, but retains all that was good about the Anglers. The staff are efficient and the Guinness is a blinding pint.
Back to being the best pub in the Area
well done
woodgreenspur - 26 Feb 2006 13:51
A nice little "traditional" pub, tucked away.

easyco - 27 Jan 2006 19:27
Been to this pub a few times since the new management has taken over, it is a really nice place to be and has a great atomosphere. The staff are really friendly, and the prices are quite resonable too.

The best nights for me have to be thursdays and friday with howard mark, it brings in a great crowd and is a very lively atmosphere.

I got to say I have tried a few boozers in woodgreen, and this by far has to be my favorite, great team behind the bar, and it is true the baby girl is really sweet, worth going down just for her.
anonymous - 25 Dec 2005 03:48
The Jolly Anglers is under new management from 22.11.2005 the new owners are great. Theres a good service with a smile from the bar staff.
The new owners have great plans for our pub and sometime in januray 06 they have a refurb planned for the pub. They are offering great entertainment on thursdays with karaoke 8pm till late ,friday nights rock with howard mark 8pm till 1am,saturday, howard with a mixture of music 8pm till 1am.Pop in and meet the new family and their baby daughter she is sweet.
totyids - 18 Nov 2005 10:44
A genuine contender for smokiest pub in Britain.
Shame really as quite a nice traditional boozer other than that and they tend to make an effort to provied good entertainment.
Mr.Monkfish - 12 Oct 2005 09:47
the anglers is a good pub, the karaoke host on a thursday is a really nice bloke.
drumandmonkeyfan - 4 Sep 2005 18:23
As an outsider on his way to a Pixie's gig at Ally Pally, I popped in for a quick pint, armed with previous comments. It must be said, there is not a great choice of pubs in the area and the Anglers is only non-chain pub that looked like a typical tradional pub that I found. No airs and graces here. Firstly, I was served quickly and found the prices very reasonable for a London pub (Strongbow 2.20). The pub is spacious with an inobtrusive pool table and dart board. Several seats outside in the beer garden (or beer patio may be a better description). On the downside, no real ales and as for the decor, if it has been recently done up, it hardly showed - a big roll of ceiling paper was hanging down above my head. There appears to be a lot of entertainment laid on of you like the karaoke / DJ sort of night (I don't) and a couple of TV's for sport.

In a nutshell, a straightforward traditional boozer that has probably seen better days but I have been in far worse pubs than this. Worth a quick pint if in the area but the Mrs will probably prefer the shops!
RogerB - 1 Sep 2005 11:15
yes, they are trying but they still have a way to go. We tried it out again a couple of weeks ago (having been regulars in Caroline's days). We were put off by the mouthy fat bald guy throwing his weight around and acting as if he owned the pub. Quite a few council types getting drunk and keeping an eye on their shopping trollies - still very downmarket.... sad when you think of how it used to be
elllie - 17 Jul 2005 11:24
Been here a couple of times great fun nice people drink a bit pricey compared to such likes as goose and wetherspoons but well worth it herd they had a few teething troubles but its up and coming watch this space its gonna get bigger and better.
icklemiss - 7 Jul 2005 17:22
It's back!!!!
I slated what this pub had become, on this very site about a year ago. i have been drinking in here since about 93. and it had down hill terribly. But with a new governor, who knows what a real pub should be, and a lick of paint! The future looks bright! I have started drinking in here again!Keep it up steve well done!!!
woodgreenspur - 11 Jun 2005 13:47
This was my local for years. I was a member of 'wan*ers corner' along with Phil, Snob, Matt, Mark...... and everyone else. Once Caroline left and the new people took over it turned into a real dive. I read that it's been done up and is trying to attract it's old customers back. Well I might just give it a go.
BWW - 9 Jun 2005 12:55
Refurb has been completed, new management are in, and the anglers is back and better than ever. A new coat of paint and a cleaned carpet have really got rid of the scummy air that this place had, without destroying its 'local boozer' character. Howard is back every friday to DJ the rock night and, in addition to this, there are now late licenses on Thursday and Saturday (as there used to be many moons ago).
Thursday is now Karaoke night, and Saturday has a fairly laid back drinking atmosphere. Prices have gone up a wee bit which is a shame, but you won't find a nicer atmosphere in any wood green pub. Come on down!
filbert - 20 Apr 2005 01:03
This pub on a Friday night, the rock night, is amazing. It is so friendly, lively and packed, and is truly a good night. Newcomers are treated like regulars as everyone talks to everyone, and it has been a regular fixture for me for about the last year. It is getting refurbed in 2 wks, so the rock night may come to an end, so if you read this, make sure you get down there on good Friday, for an absolute truly great night. I'll see you there.
TekkieT - 16 Mar 2005 17:32
The Jolly Anglers on Station Rd used to be my regular pub when i was a student at Middx Uni. You knew that you could get a cheap pint, meet up with your mates for a few games of pool and get a garaunteed invite to a party. But since they closed down the Quicksilver Place campus in Wood Green, the pub has gone a bit downhill. I popped in there recently on a friday evening for a quick pint and i was suprised at how quite it was.
Now i drink in the Nelson around the corner.
ganger - 11 Mar 2005 14:28
i used to go there every friday but in the last year or so i havent bothered going there because there is no where to sit or even move, you can't talk to any one cos they can't hear you and having to pay to get into a small local pub is taking it abit to far, o and the bouncers are dicks. i hope one day it will turn back to how it used to be.
anonymous - 27 Oct 2004 14:43
Used to be a brilliant 'local'. Fallen victim to the 'we must attract youngsters' trend which has tidal waved through Britain's towns and cities.
Owen - 7 Oct 2004 15:49
hi i've been to the jolly anglers a couple of times now and i find it very impressive. the music is very good and i enjoy it as do my friends.
samson - 20 Sep 2004 01:52
Good news! heard a rumour the Anglers is getting major re-furb!!! Hopefully it will be a cleaned up version of what the pub is now!!! I might get my local back!!!!!
sean - 28 Jul 2004 13:21
The Anglers can be a bit hit and miss but any night that howard marks, god bless him, is DJing is always good. They just lost their saturday late licence so no more bouncers or loud music till Sunday. Cheap beer, friendly staff and close to the station without being packed with winos. The Anglers always seems to be more loved by people who left the area but I would still reccomend it. 7/10 rating.
joe - 16 Jul 2004 14:07
Very, very, very, very average. The only thing to make it stand out is the late licence on Fridays, which is coupled with cheap drinks (no real ale, Worthingtons creamflow and Guinness) and a very youthful clientele. It's a good place if you like getting drunk in a pub and jumping around to loud music at the same time.
A.B.R. - 15 Jul 2004 15:40
I'll feel saddened and disgusted when i go in here now! this was my local for 11years! And up until about a year ago was by far the best pub in N22! its dirty and shabby beyond believe. I work shifts and used to pop in there after work, bout 10:101 just for a couple befor going home. Now i have to pay3 for doing so, on a fri&sat night.A decent local has died!!
sean - 22 Jun 2004 13:35
WOW!!! The comment dated 10th April is possibly a little bit strong... Yes it does have doormen on the door on a Friday Saturday night and by the way it does not have 2 it has 4. The staff are very hard working and only have a drink after work.(I know that because I have had a drink with them on a few occasions.)The place is only dirty in the public areas and I know that the lines are cleaned ever week by the trainee bar supervisor. The pub has the concept that everything is under 2.00,so as you can imagine some of the punters are not the type who you would take home to meet the family.Lets give the new manageress time to make her mark on the place. However it does need a major referb and not just a lick of paint,, it is very grubby, and if you want to have a VERY quick pint and you do not have a lot of money in you pocket, walk another 50 yards along the path and go to the Goose. My rating 2/3.
anthony - 21 Apr 2004 19:49
I'm suggesting this pub as this is one to definitely avoid. It WAS a great little pub, student-based as it's right next to the halls of residence. It used to have a friendly atmosphere - and barbeques in the garden in the summer. A recent visit proved to be a bit of a shock. It's changed hands, has 2 bouncers on the door now and is a victim of steep decline. The barmaid who, eventually served us, seemed to be under the influence of who knows what, the whole place was unbelievably filthy. The carpet was completely black and sticky. We ended up dumping our pints after one mouthful thinking if it's this bad to the eye, god knows when they last cleaned their pipes - this is one to definitely avoid. Shame that the new manager could ruin what was once a fantastic little pub where we used to enjoy Sunday afternoons watching the footie. Rating should be -10!
