user reviews of the Gun Tavern, Croydon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's closed and reopened as a bar and grill. And not a very good one, sadly.

First visit to this pub a couple of Saturdays ago, and thus I can only report on what I experienced: no obvious recent refurbishment; a terrible half of something purporting to be Courage Directors, leaving a very unpleasant aftertaste on ones' palate; extremely grim lavatorial facilities, devoid of soap and hot water; and finally - if I had booked the function room for my wedding reception, my prospective fiance would have quite frankly been within her rights to break off the engagement.
Once again the only redeeming feature seemed to be the bar service. There is a paucity of decent boozers within the West Croydon area, and I just can't fathom why in this economic climate some of them don't appear to be trying harder. If the Gun does the job for some people then fair enough, though personally I'm just unable to recommend it.

Well folks this pub has a new Manager, and the cobwebs have gone!! The place although not refurbished is CLEAN and you can use the loos without a gas mask. they are having a refurb in the near future. there is at least 2 really well kept real ales. The pub has improved and you are welcomed on arrival. Live music every other week and Karaoke on the second week. Function room for your weddings and christenings. A small garden for a smoke in the summer.
I must say the new Manager has the right approach, he treats everyone the same ( no favourites) please fell free to visit and make yourselves known. he wont bite!!!

An OK pub with very boring blue decor, in desperate need of a revamp.

Great TEA on draught, and good Strongbow. Bar maid very nice.

A word of warning though, THE TOILET'S ARE SKANKY!!! Cobwebs, with resident spider, in between the ancient gel freshener and the mirror by the sink, & in the corners of the toilet doors! Remnants of other females bodily functions in the toilet bowl! Someone's crisp packet on the floor of one of the loos & water on the floor of another! Flies will join you too. Probably attracted to the interesting stagnant aroma. A reliable source informed me that the Gents were just as bad. Not a place we will be returning to in a hurry. You can't charge 6.10 for two pints and then provide such insanitary conditions for paying customers!

Shame the bad outweighed the good.

Been drinking in Croydon for 10 odd years now, having seen alot of the night-life, and went through the stage of the 'Orchid' was the best place to be with mates on a Saturday night, just bring those free champayne vouchers
Always heard this place was dodgy. Avoid unless you want a fight. And lets face it.. the name of the pub doesn't exactly raise confidence levels
However, just lately, I wondered in to see what all the fuss was about...
I was pleasantly surprised. Ok its nothing special, but its quite a comfortable place to pop in, loads of room so people do just mind their business, and a place to drink, play pool, use the jukebox, although there's no great selection on tap.
Much better than the Eagle at the end of the road, which you do feel you might need a gun for.

Tired looking pub and the drab blue walls and lack of customers made it a bit depressing. Minimalist decor with a few traditional touches remaining. Four handpumps but only Youngs Ordinary showing, I was then told that was off and offered John Smiths Smooth - no thanks. I had a Guinness at a frankly obscene 3.40, no wonder the place was empty. They even had the cheek to put up a blackboard saying they were absorbing the recent tax rises. Two pool tables and a dartboard. I'm sure it serves the needs of its regulars but even if I lived next door I'd not be one of them.

Cavernous public house, more charming on the inside that it promises to be from the out.
Nothing unusual about what's on draught but worth a visit.

Quite a nice pub. Near-ish to Walkabouts so all the people wanting to go to more bar/club type pubs will go there, which gives it quite a local feel. Does a lovely pint of Carling Extra cool.
