user reviews of Yates's, Watford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Normally I would give a place like this a low score, but having just come from the appalling Mosquito bar, Yates's came as quite a relief despite the pounding music, the rather downmarket clientele, and the litter lying all over the place. Unlike most of the places on the Parade, this did have bitter on tap - even if it was just GK IPA.

staff are thick as shit. dont know prices or even what drinks they serve.
"do you serve morgans spiced rum?"
"uhhh i dont know, we got barcardi, its five, maybe five fifty for one i think, um, yeh for a double."
Jesus...

Only go here if its sunny so I can sit outside. Cheap n cheerful.

Typical Yatess, cheap and tacky, but being located between two of Watford nightclubs there are no end of cheap and tacky clients flocking there on a weekend. Loads of fruit machines and a quiz machine. For some reason they only serve Extra Cold Guinness and not the regular stuff.

Nobody drinks anything other than Carling or Stella and that says it all. Watford is poor for pubs, but this one is still to be avoided.

Seems to attract scummers and shirtless northern labourers like poo attracts flies.

Vast improvement over the last 12 months, new manager, busy again. Beer garden looking good for those hot summer afternoons.

A drinking hole, no more, no less..

Don't go to this place. Legalities prevent me from saying what i truly feel about the management of this venue. I've researched, and the present owners of this chain are a company called Laurel. I've written to them pointing out the fact that the (so-called) manageress is rude, blinkered and if she were the last person on Earth, she should still not be employed in the service industry.

Hmmmm. Yates wine lodge. No one called Yates, no people drinking wine and certainly no lodging facilities. Misnomer methinks.

Watford's Breeding Ground for Alcohol-Fuelled Glassings. Ahhh, that's better.

recently had a mini facelift but drinks are still expensive. The dj on a Friday is a blast with a nice line in pimp suits! Good tunes too. definately an improvement overall in the last 3 months.

Nothing special. A pub worth going in for one drink and the moving swiftly on.

My mate was overcharged for her drink too, and then a few minutes later it happened again.

Staff are not overlly friendly, but the door staff are good.

This place will never return to its hayday when its original Management, Crew and unique Doorstaff knew how to pack it out. Its been a while since i seen a queue which was part and parcel of a very successful high street venue. Cutbacks after Cutbacks have made the offer a shadow of what it used to be. You corporate clowns at Head office should bow your heads in shame. Its embarrassing to see it try to emulate earlier days

A bit chavved if you ask me
hjr2000 - 12 Jan 2006 03:22
I've only ever been here on a Saturday night....and its REALLY packed! I pushed my way through the crowd to the bar, waved my tenner in the air, and got served straight away :) Nicely situated next to Destiny, plays great dance anthems and house classics. My only complaint is that it was unbareably hot.

I agree with the last comment, the person who wrote that comment before about the new management,dj's ect. Is talking rubbish. It is one of the quietist pubs in Watford. I do know one thing though and that is that that comment was written by the TEMPORARY manageress, so a little bit favoured to the pub I think. Bad when you have to advertise on a web site your own boozer????????

Who are you trying to kid, the place has not changed one bit in recent weeks, and when the weather is nice the gents loos stink to high heaven. When will these be sorted out. The place is still dead 24/7. The staff may have changed but nothing changes.

What are these guys saying? This used to be the busiest bar in town... well yes... then it took a dip... well yes too. But!!! Have you been in there recently? There are new staff, new managers, new DJ's (who happen to be very good! and actually listen to what you request AND PLAY IT! unlike most other venues!) Monday nights are excellent! Free entry, they've started opening til late (12 I think?) and their drinks prices are so cheap! The DJ is really good and there is such a great atmosphere in there! It doesn't get busy til later in the nite but me and my mates go in early to get speedier service!!! Started goin in there fridays again too! Did lose faith a bit but they seem to have sorted out their 'issues!' New DJ and better staff (including door!)
Well worth a try to this one, even if you had lost faith in the chain... the one in Colchester is WICKED too!! Student nights are great!

Crap music, served very quickly, seriously needed more seats though as there was no way i was about to start dancing to britney spears or girls aloud...
angelk18 - 23 Jan 2005 01:22
Way too noises cant hold conversation as cant hear each other.

Full of under age Chavs.

Can get served fairly quickly though

Fairly dingy

Crap music

Not bad, however not good either! Arrived at 12 noon on a Tuesday (the advertised opening time) it was nearly 1pm when they finally decided to open up! Usual Yates interior, dreary non-helpful staff which I've come to expect from this chain. The only thing which cheered me up was a FREE pint with my "wrap". Trouble was, it was a pint of Carling Nats' Piss! Still it was free I suppose!

Might go back next time I'm in London just out of morbid curiosity to see if its improved. I doubt it do you? September 2004 Rating 3/10

Very boring, no atmosphere and poor service from the staff, food very poor and waited ages. Didn't enjoy the Yates experience in Watford. Maybe they need a rethink, not as good as the one in Bourenmouth,
anonymous - 28 Oct 2004 13:57
This pub has no atmosphere, the music is bland and the DJ's seem to just play R&B which when really this pub should create a party vibe. This pub used to be busy but seems to have lost its cliental that they used to have, this pub used to be the hub of Watford but is now very quiet.
Paul - 29 Aug 2004 15:41
i think the staff are really friendly. the service is quick music is good.
Kelly - 21 Jul 2004 12:14
In a word SHOCKING - Give it a miss and go to Reflex, Lloyds or Bar ME, more women and a much better service.
gareth - 21 Jul 2004 11:35
lloyds no.2 more like - come on yatses be original - dont try to copy the bar that stole your crown !!!
Dominic - 26 Jun 2004 06:05
Went there dressed up for a friends birthday. DJ was a laugh, but the bouncers were rude, and the bar staff were very slow, and the music was random. Whats the deal with girls being able to wear hats an blokes can't?? I don't understand?? Pathetic !!
Katey Wilson - 14 May 2004 09:40
Why bother with this pub, it should be closed down. The service is shocking, the place smells and the staff need to be fired as they are so rude and that includes The Manager aswell as bar staff and door staff. This pub is so quiet that I am suprised that it can take any money so Yates's should close it down and let a decent pub chain buy this prime site. During the day it is either dead or full of old people and at night it is also quiet, even on a Friday and Saturday night when all the other pubs in the town have queues. This pub was once the best place in town and now it has become the worst over the last 6 months. Come on Yates's sort it out.
Peter Lawson - 3 Mar 2004 09:22
This pub used to be the busiest pubs in town but has now gone downhill. Just had a refurb but it looks like something from the grease movie inside, there is never anyone in there even on a Friday and Saturday night. The staff are rude and the pub has only old people for customers, and I mean Old, OAP club. - Do yourself a favour and go else where. This pub has had it's day and what was once the place to go in Watford is now the place to avoid.Yates's try to be like Lloyds but they only end up looking second rate compared to them.
Steve - 27 Jan 2004 13:20
Adam and Calum must be going at the wrong times of the week! On Thursdays and Saturdays, this pub has one of the best atmospheres in Greater London, with quick service, likeable beau monde customers (majority) friendly eccentrics (significant minority) and DJ's who really know their stuff. The decor is pretty cosy too. Sorry fellas, I think you just got the thin end of the wedge!
Cornelius - 24 Jan 2004 18:47
now gone under refurbishment and is called yates 'wine lodge'!! prob good inside, staff could be friendly but don't wanna go near it due to the arsehole customers (not all but a majority)
calum - 5 Dec 2003 10:08
Well reading the above comment I feel sorry for Adam. I worked at Yates Watfrod for six months until I started uni, and at 21 years old I was the oldest bar man, and I'm sure i don't smell of urine. The bar does get very busy, but luckily we had great staff such as me (trained by Alex Beaumont himself from the film cocktail) so despite being 4 deep people were served surprisingly quickly. Perhaps Yates could just employ beautiful bimbos, but it does not as they want to provide quality service
Terry - 29 Nov 2003 20:03
Unfortunatley this prime space at the busy end of Watford is completely wasted on having this pub placed here. It's absolutely ram packed with complete wasters and old men who smell of stale urine - and they are just the bar staff. The food there is appalling and i would feel embarrassed serving it up to starving Africans.
Also, the beer smells of farts.
