user reviews of the Attimore Hall, Welwyn Garden City

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Bypassed four pubs to come here because you can rely on a good selection of ales and today was no exception. What a choice, I'll begin with pump one.
"A pint of Purity Ubu please barman"
'Sorry it's off' he said. Next pump had Purity Mad Goose. 'That's also off'

"Not to worry" I said, "Purity's Gold, not had that one before" 'Off' "London Pride?" 'No' "Not much chance of Ghost Ship then?" 'Yes, it's on'

He begins to pour my pint, then stops. 'Oh, sorry, while you were deciding what to have a customer has just had the last pint from the barrel'
So that leaves the dreaded Doombar. "Please tell me that has also run out?" I pray.
'No, there is plenty left' he said 'Very popular with the customers' "You do surprise me" I added sarcastically. "I don't think I'll bother"

And all this at 7 O'clock on a Wednesday evening - no wonder pubs are closing down every week.

'daisydew' obviously left here in a moo-d. Beware one-post members.
This is only my third visit here but could not agree less than her review below.

Three hand pumps, all in use and all in good condition. I'm not going to suggest you would not like them - we all have different tastes.

There is quite a collection of pump clips behind the bar - suggesting a varied selection of ales previously served.

There is a good choice of food, most costing £7 to £8. It is not 5 star restaurant quality but it is cooked well (steaks are perfect) and hot (without the use of a microwave). The barman/manager is very pleasant and hard working.

If 'daisydew' would like to suggest a better pub in Welwyn that serves guest ales (not Greene King or McMullen's please) and serves good food a reasonable prices, I would be willing to give it a try.

My only warning to all is PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE !!! firstly they don't have a beer u would like to have ( most of the time they are out of stock ) secondly the food is over priced .....because its tasteless cold and i believe stale . so basically whats a point going there and flushing ur money down the drains . nothing good about it as far as i can remember althought its just been a day i was there !!!

An Ember Inns pub, with a choice of three ales. The Elgood Black Dog and Itchen's Treacle Stout were on the warm side (the barman did say the cooler was playing-up) but at least they were still better than the dreaded Greene King swill you get in Hertfordshire.
Food choice, price and taste were quite adequate.
A better pub than when I last visited about ten years ago.
Would come again...........within ten years.

Visited this pub alot more recently, the new managers must be doing a good job as the beer is much better, service is quicker and i may even be tempted by the food. Keep up the good work Keith!

Visited this pub 10 years ago with my Father. Encountered yobish louts in the beer garden who were in my opinion under age. There seemed to be a lot of under age drinkers that night. Not impressed at all. Might give the place a second chance given some good reviews below. Looks like things have changed thank goodness!

Getting a bit chavy and expensive cashpoint. Beers good!

Has been my local for a long time now and it has gone right down hill, they keep changing the manager and the staff are just lazy and rude. The tables are constantly cluttered the service slow and the beer with a faint eggy smell to it. They need to employ some freindly staff and get a good manager in thats got experience within the trade. I know this pub very well as i used to work here and it can do alot better than present, it just needs some guidence. Although i keep going back because of the people who drink there and thats the only reason.

Part of the Ember Inns chain, this place has a series of rooms off the central corridor and a bar towards the rear.Three handpumps with Courage Best always on and the free drink option on grill and curry nights. Two regularly changing guests which on my visit were Springhead Chocolate Orange Twist and Batemans Miss Luscious which was served much too cold , initially destroying the character but OK once it had warmed up.The food offering is keenly priced ,mains in the 5-6 range and similar to a Wetherspoons offering in a more up market setting. The interior is smartish and children under 14 are banished to the garden in an attempt to attract an adult audience and maintain a low chav count. Beer quality very dependent on the skill of the manager and the aggressive use of the chiller indicates a lack of understanding despite a very friendly welcome.

A nice clean, busy pub but the beer could be in better condition.

Beer is okay - not happy with the ban on kids under 14

Kids over 14 allowed ONLY if eating a meal.

Saving grace is the "WORD-UP" video game (for what it's worth)

The Attie has gone through quite a lot of changes since it opened (I was there that night). Reasonable selection of beers and lagers and the staff are generally OK.
Now I'm a family man I find it a shame they ban kids from the garden, even on a sunny Sunday lunchtime.

Although they've got a Cask Marque, the pint of Black Sheep Best I had in there tasted faintly of emulsion paint. Perhaps the other beers are better kept.
