please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As per the previous comment albeit 5 years ago this pub has done well in a shady area. Not sure if anyone reads these comment anymore, they certainly don't post much by the look of it but pop in and meet the hard working people who own The Dolphin

The Dolphin had a new landlord in 2015,he has made a big difference, now a pub to seek out rather than avoid.
slerpy - 22 Jan 2017 11:15
Chance find while walking the back streets. Summer lightning on top form and a basic clean and friendly pub.
addlened - 10 Apr 2015 17:44
found it a decent enough pub - the crop circle and summer lightning were good and it is handy for the station.
anonymous - 7 Sep 2013 15:11
I called into The Dolphin briefly last week and found it to be looking really good - Colin the new Landlord is doing a good job.
Crop Circle in excellent condition and the pub feels very relaxed with a good atmosphere
beerlover56 - 31 Jul 2013 16:37
The Dolphin has reopened (last week) under new management. Hop Back's web site currently says "reopens Thursday 16 May will (sic) new landlord, Colin. Lord Burninbum of the Chalfonts and I dropped in yesterday and had a couple of pints of Crop Circle each. The place seems to be on the up.
Steveexpopes - 19 May 2013 09:47
The Dolphin has now re-opened (Thursday 16 May 2013), with a new landlord, Colin, who has smartened the place up considerably. Worth a visit.
Rocketdog - 17 May 2013 13:03
Well that lasted a long time, didn't it?

A microbrewery being installed in January? which January?, and would you really shut your doors when doing work out the back? yeah good business sense that! Glad to see the turnover has been doubled. Nice to know you have two friends!

Hey, Steveexpopes, get back to spotting buses, when you can be a responsible drinker then people might talk to you. Get your facts right or you might get yourself nicked for Libel!

DolphinLandLord - 6 Feb 2013 13:14
I'd arranged to meet some friends down from London in the Dolphin yesterday afternoon (one of them had visited in the days of Dawn & Bob). However when I got there found it closed with a notice up to the effect that the microbrewery was being installed and hoped to reopen in January. Looking forward to it!

As for us - defaulted to t'Wellie (the Wellington Arms) and met up there.
Steveexpopes - 16 Dec 2012 14:31
We re-opened a month ago with Butcombe,Crop Circle and Landlord on tap. No loud music, fruit machine, pool table, television or karaoke. There is a dart board, table skittles (when I get some new skittles) and bar billiards is on the way.
There is a 10%discount for card carrying CAMRA members.

johnlon - 10 Oct 2012 00:42
The pub is presently closed for refurbishment and should re-open in a couple of weeks. There will be no pool table, no karaoke or loud music, no pool table, no television. There will be good beer, with a micro-brewery planned. Watch this space.
johnlon - 10 Aug 2012 10:15
Why does this place always seem to be closed (as it was yesterday at about 1500) despite the Hop Back website showing it as open all day, every day?
cheshirecat - 25 May 2012 09:04
For someone who has a lot of bad things to say about a lot of places, you always keep coming back, why? nobody else has any problems, like I said get your drinking under control, you know the locals don't like you when you're being offensive.
DolphinLandLord - 30 Aug 2011 11:49
I think the Landlord just proved your point about this one Slerpy! as the kids would say LOL
Henners - 30 Aug 2011 10:13
Hey Slerpy just because you were thrown out because you wee'd in your pants you don't have to take it out on the barman, hey learn some manners and control your drinking then we might let you in again, but in the meantime you smell of wee and you are very offensive and you are not welcome in Weymouth.
DolphinLandLord - 30 Aug 2011 10:01
Hopback Hop Medley was very good when popped by on carnival day. friendly and welcoming backstreet pub/hotel, 6/10
fat_beer_badger - 25 Aug 2011 14:16
Poor pub on every level, often beerless and always cheerless, the barman is a grubby obese slob with manners to match, highly avoidable.
slerpy - 24 Jul 2011 16:02
Nice friendly atmosphere & the beer was very good, especially the spring zing
TuttutKaz - 6 May 2011 21:23
I regularly pop in The Dolphin when im in Weymouth & I have always found it to be a friendly pub, the beers are 1st class & the staff are always friendly & helpful + the free wi-fi access is brilliant
DraftyFagan - 6 May 2011 20:25
3 ales always on, Summer Lightning, Spring Zing and GFB this week, 2.50, 2.40 & 2.30 respectively. Hot food to order all day everyday.

Yes last time I was there in May they didn't have any ales on either - the barman reckoned they hadn't paid the bill for their previous delivery. Had to make do with drinking his entire stock of bottled Taiphoon - both bottles!! Time before though they did have the Summer Lightning on which was in perfect nick and only 2.00 a pint.

Always a friendly pub though and ideal for stopping off before your train (and maybe miss the next one or two if the craic is good).
johnthechef - 27 Nov 2010 22:37
Friendly small local, conveniently close to the station but not on top of it. Summer Lightning was good.
MrBabble - 6 Oct 2010 08:16
Has anyone ever seen a guest ale at the Dolphin ? The pubs owner/brewer states in the London Drinker( October/november2010) that he has a "low" barrelage tie with the incumbent tenant, this seems to me to imply that the Dolphin regularly stocks an amazing array of guest ales.I regularly visit Weymouth and feel really unlucky to have missed out on this cornucopia of ales on every visit, am I unlucky or is this a chimera of his fervent imagination? It strikes me that the two Wetherspoons pubs in Weymouth enjoy a roaring trade whilst the Dolphin remains( by his admission ) "the pub with no beer".Pub goers are a funny lot ,they tend to drink where the beer is available, most shocking!!! 0/10
slerpy - 2 Oct 2010 16:55
No deliver No real ale to next week stated the barman.
slerpy - 2 Aug 2010 13:21
I was pleasantly surprised to find a Hopback Brewery pub in Weymouth so we walked out of our way to visit on the evening of May 27th. Not one real ale on the four hand pumps. This is something I would expect from a bar owned by a PubCo, not a small breweries own house. Maybe Hopback are more interested in selling lager these days? When we walked in (and soon left) the barman didnt even notice us anyway as he was too busy chatting to his mates at the bar. Thank God for Wetherspoons which had decent beers on at both outlets.
markh737 - 4 Jun 2010 21:09
Called in here on the way back to the station as it's so near. Dissappointed to find only one ale on, Summer Lightening, instead of usual four I think. Having said that very good it was and excellent value.
Steamer1 - 27 May 2010 11:12
funny how things change, i called in for a few pints the other day and i must say the beers are excellent, started with a few pints of gfb followed by lashings of summer lightning. Maybe 'steveexpopes' day was a bad one or he doesn't know his real ales.
at 2 a pint I can't see how the beer can stay so long in the keg!
hoofie - 14 May 2010 12:21
I used to drive buses from the garage just around the corner and if I had a mid evening finish I'd drop in for a quick pint or several on my way home. When Bob and Dawn were there the beer was in tip top condition and the atmosphere was good. When they went and it shut down for a while was about the same time as I packed up the bus driving - I didn't fancy another season of grockles. I went in there the first time since then yesterday. The only customers were a young couple and brat who seemed to be in the middle of a domestic, the Gilbert's (GFB) could have been produced by Sarsons and the glass was filthy. As they used to say in the News of the Screws "I made my excuses and left". It's a pity ratings don't go into the minus scale.
Steveexpopes - 28 Apr 2010 22:53
Friendly pub serving Hopback real ales. Unfortunately both my pint of GFB and my mate's pint of Summer Lightning were very disappointing (had that smell about them).
foodman - 18 Apr 2010 10:38
Great basic boozer. Real Ales all at 2 on Saturday when I visited. GFB was excellent as was the Crop Circle after the barrel was changed.
cheshirecat - 7 Sep 2009 09:23
I was intrigued to read on B.I.T.E. that the Dolphin had temporarily closed, therefore I feared the worst.I visited the Dolphin four times last week , not in any research capacity for you lot ! Simply because the ales were bl**dy fantastic ! ALL ales were a flat two pounds a pint, which did I must admit add to the charm of the place.it is still a magnet for the Celtic hordes that inhabit Weymouth( they are a bit like Manchester United fans but are clearly a sub species).Slerpy realised that Celtic were playing on E.S.P.N. on Saturday and made a timely escape, as I made my way out I passed a stream of green and white wasps entering the place. the lesson being timing is everything.Free takeaway containers are avalilable- yes seriously!
slerpy - 22 Aug 2009 21:12
Pub is indeed reopened, all the best to all.
justdarkbeer - 12 Jul 2009 00:50
i was sad to see that this pub had closed however i was just walking past over the weekend and the pub has just re-opened and i must say the real ales (hopback) are well looked after (i think they must have had a good sort out)
landlord and landlady are friendly, although the pub is a little quiet i'm sure it will get busy again, entertainment is promised for future weekends, seems the place has been re-decorated and they even have a outside smoking area, some good prices for beers with gfb at 2 squid, worth a visit
hoofie - 8 Jul 2009 14:58
Been closed for weeks now, faded sign says closed due to illness. open next week.
justdarkbeer - 29 May 2009 10:02
The beer is superb - Hopback ales - probably in the top 5 pubs in Weymouth in my opinion. Also, damn handy for a quick pint while waiting for the train (it's about two minutes' walk from the railway station). Friendly staff, whether busy or quiet and can sometimes stay open pretty late. Don't expect anything flashy and you won't be disappointed, you certainly won't be upset about the quality of your pint.

Visited a couple of times just to make sure the first bad experience wasnt a one off. Every time the pub was dead, the staff were dull, the deco is old & tatty. This a run down boozer with very little going on. Dont bother.
chriswozere - 9 Sep 2008 15:15
The only jock i met in here was the docile near 100 year old barman and he was sober. The ale was tip top,the Crop Circle for 2 a pt was stunning. The landlady was "TW",to coin a crank term, and pleasant as well. The only criticism i could offer is that the range of 4 hopbacks was 3 on arrival but had diminished to 1 by our departure but there was no sign of replacements. That aside,an excellent pub and along with the Boot one of the best in Waymuff.
an_ecunemical_matter - 7 Sep 2008 10:43
Last week I spent a considerable time here, the beer is top rate the jocks are sufferable and the service is very good.
slerpy - 30 Aug 2008 20:38
For a pub that supports the forces it gets our vote came down from bristol received a warm welcome. The pub was full of ex service men/woman 2 pint for serving ex serving army navy raf Good atmosphere no trouble Great nite out for the family

johnbainbridge - 1 Jul 2008 00:27
This place always seems to attract negative comments. Okay the decor is a bit odd and the customers are unusual to say the least, but the beer is good - and is a bargain at 1.75 for a pint of Crop Circle on a Saturday afternoon.
BillyD - 5 Nov 2007 09:25
Hey youse jimmy, the scottish ghetto of Weymouth.Do NOT enter if you cannot tolerate drunken jocks!
slerpy - 20 Aug 2007 19:27
Empty and no atmosphere with cheap deco.
Robster - 10 Apr 2007 21:37
Run by Dawn and Bob, great atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights with various entertainment going on in and out. A real good mix of ages and people from all backgrounds such as Male / female, black / white, gay / straight / Bi / Trans, young and old etc. feel welcome. Well worth visiting and making it a regular.
anonymous - 15 Jan 2007 14:12
I don't know whether or not there has been a change of Landlord since 'mothola's visit but the Hopback ales were plentiful and well kept on my recent visit, the Crop Circle being particularly good. Also no sign of karaoke (thank goodness) or football fans, just a few locals who seemed alright.
johnkn7 - 3 Jan 2007 19:31
Friendly staff and the summer lightning and crop circle served in a pretty good condition. Quite a few in was boxing night, atmosphere pleasant.
bellevueace - 31 Dec 2006 21:29
Good range of Hop Back beers, reasonably well served. Friendly welcome from landlord and staff. There is a function room and a very big telly, but enough space elsewhere for a peaceful drink. Very convenient for the station.
fromedrinker - 25 Apr 2006 12:42
This is a strange pub no doubt about it. The comments below must refer to a time when this pub actually cared about real ale and comfortable surroundings. Trading off the back of (a hopefully soon to be recalled)good beer guide recomendation and the successful hopback beer range, this pub is of no interest to trad pub lovers. My main beef with this place is that given my visit was on a saturday evening, all four ales were off (could no one could be bothered to change any barrel?). secondly the place was empty, when all the other pubs were busy, which I felt was indicative of a poorly run pub. Crap entertainment (Mr guitar Karaoke) and terrible furnishings. This pub caters more for the football crowd (rangers Vs celtic nonesense)and the freak show that has was left behind when the circus came to town. Don't go here - try the boot, its leagues ahead.
mothola - 14 Feb 2006 08:09
Great atmosphere, very friendly service and great Hop Back beer!
anonymous - 8 Jan 2006 18:04
I popped in last Saturday, having travelled down on a rail tour from Ramsgate for the day. Having only just over an hour's turn-round time, I exited the railway station and cast an eye around.

The first thing I saw was the sign outside the pub. My seven colleagues and I descended upon this pub with the speed of a thousand gazelles!

A lovely pub whos frontage belies its size. It is an elongated "L" shape with a pool table tucked around the corner at the rear of the pub. As stated, it is a Hop Back pub, and I slaked my thirst with three splendid pints of Summer Lightning at what one would consider to be a bargain price of 1.75 per pint. Yes, you did NOT misread that - 1.75 per pint!

Only 'Spoons charge less, and if you read my comments on some ( or most, come to that ) of the 'Spoons I've visited, I'd rather pay the extra every time. I'm used to paying between 2.20 - 2.50 for Summer Lightning.

Also on offer were Crop Circle and GFB. I had taster's of both. The GFB had a lovely finish to it, but, unfortunately, the Crop Circle was the last in the barrel, and time was not a luxury that was on our side, so we were unable to wait for a new barrel to be put on.

All in all, a smashing little pub.
5thearlofwimbourne - 22 Sep 2005 12:45
This is a lovely small side-street pub a minute walk from Weymouth station - you'll see the Hop Back sign as you come out! Most of the Hop Back range is on draft, beer is cared for, the clientele are chatty and the landlord is very friendly and a great bloke! The pub also has a skittle alley although there was a pool table on it when I last visited! A great place for a beer any time of day.
Get_me_some_Old_Tom - 21 Apr 2005 13:58
Good friendly, well run pub. The ales are mostly from the Hop Back Brewery and are excellent. Usually live entertainment at weekends.
