Agreed. Long overdue and hats off to Sussex Police.

and I quote....

THE HORSE and Groom pub in Horsham has been shut down, after police presented evidence in court of cocaine use on the premises. The East Street pub will be boarded up and all access denied until midnight October 14, after a decision by Mid Sussex Magistrates Court in Haywards Heath yesterday afternoon (Friday August 15). Following a dramatic raid on Thursday August 7, police found cannabis and a small quantity of cocaine on the East Street premises. Scanning equipment used on surfaces in the pub gave high readings of cocaine residue, both in private and public areas, including on the pool table, according to a statement given to the court by Inspector Martin Pattenden.

Magistrate Kenneth Berry said: "We are satisfied that closure is necessary to prevent serious nuisance and disorder, therefore we believe that the action we are taking in terms of issuing a closure order is appropriate."

Well done Sussex police long, long overdue in my book.

Beer (Spitfire) was excellent and the food looked good value as well barmaid was friendly but the locals in there looked as tho they had been sat there for the last 20 years without moving
superseagulls - 26 May 2008 12:39
beer and the food is exceptionally good value but don,t expect gastro - just good honest nosh. Obviously a sport and drinkers pub and judging by the fact it was almost empty on a Saturday lunchtime I guess in only comes to life in the evening or when a match is on. Far better than the other two places we looked at. Definitely on my list for a break when undergoing retail therapy in Horsham.

Looked a bit rough from the outside but upon entering, great beer and a well busted lass behind the bar. Hmm! See you next season.

Staff are friendly if you take the time to talk to them. The punters could be seen as a little rough around the edges but I think that's a good thing. Music is normally a bit touch and go in general, weekend D.J. very much go if you know what I mean?! Food is actually pretty good considering the price. If you want a good piss up in the company of people intending on doing the exact same thing, this is the place.

The "Doom & Gloom" good boozer by all accounts, friendly drinkers, staff are fast (if you know them & don't shout oi) lager is cold! good place to watch the sport & nobody bats an eyelid if i fall over in a drunken mess or pass out in the toilet. self governed pub, kick off & they kick you out, no old bill involved!! not the sort of place to take the misses on a first date but ya can smoke at the bar get of ya tits & have a giggle it is what it looks like

All of these other reviews are somewhat out of date - and you only need to see how busy the place is to question whether or not its an enjoyable, comfortable, congenial and friendly atmosphere. And the beer is pretty damned good too. Excellently served and husbanded real ale back on, new LCD screens for the best sports coverage in Horsham and friendly staff and customers at the bar. I've certainly no complaints - it's my new local, and I don't even live that locally.

The 'The House of Doom'. Strange pub, good if you have hearing problems due to the loud music or want to take your little kids into a smoke filled place!!??

Quality?????

A large, two-storey, gabled, street-corner local, Victorian in origin, the Horse and Groom was last GBG listed a quarter of a century ago when it served Whitbread Trophy and Pompey Royal. It is these days the type of place where snapshots of the regulars enjoying themselves in the pub are collected, framed and displayed on the walls. There are the expected gaming machines, and a blackboard advertises DJ Nick. Sat 7.30. It was almost certainly once two separate rooms, but is now one large area around a central quarter-circular bar. The area to the rear has a pool table and there are three TV screens set above the bar, all showing the same inane programme, which I would guess is called How Stupid is Your Pet?. Two larger sets on the left and right walls remain, mercifully, switched off. About half a dozen regulars, in their twenties and thirties are sitting on stools around the bar; the reminder of the seating is on chairs around both square and round wooden tables, with a couple of comfy chairs under one of the blank TV screens next to the front door. Approaching the bar I am pleasantly surprised to see bottled Hepworth Pullman on sale, but the handpump selection is less promising: there are three; two are unused and the third dispenses Fullers London Pride. A half of this costs 1.25 but, not for the first time during this particular lunchtime session, I find my beer to be vinegary. The female member of staff offers apologies and John Smith Smooth is suggested as a replacement. I have an orange juice. To her credit she turns the pump clip round and also goes down to the cellar, presumably to change the barrel. There is some flushing and drawing of pumps, but I have finished my juice and dont have time or inclination enough to hang around to see what transpires.
