Hi. It's been interesting to read all the comments going back over so long on here. Like many town centre pubs, there's been so much change with the Canal Bar and Old Waggon & Horses, which we thought may be useful to share.

We've recently refurbished the whole place, including:
Refurbished bar in the Old Waggon.
Refurbished customer toilets
Refurbished and reinsulated Canal Bar
Fitting a smoking shelter and outdoor fireplace on the sun terrace

The Canal Bar stocks a wide range of lagers, and speciality rums and bourbons, and our staff will happily pop up to the 'top bar' if you prefer real ales (rotating guest ale alongside Sharps' Doom Bar).

We're developing the entertainment side too, with live bands every Friday from near and far, a top quality open mic sessions on Sundays, and Newbury DJ legend Smiley Dave keeping everyone going until the wee hours on Saturdays.

And for a change at lunchtime, our thai kitchen offers authentic curries and stirfries from 5.95.

If you'd like to know more, pop in and see us.

What can I say- it's rough. Nice little way of getting served quicker when you're off to the Canal bar (as they join up) but the clientele in here is...not great. You feel you;re always watching your back.

Lousy beer, but a brilliant rock night on a Saturday, with great atmosphere, heavy metal and dancing.

The Canal Bar (part of this pub) could be so nice but is run down with broken and dirty outside furniture. The only bitter is John Smiths - what a lack of imagination. Myself and Thai partner tried the food and were disappointed. My chicken was dry and tasteless. My partner's lamb dish looked and tasted old. A shame - the location is nice but whoever runs the place needs to up his game. The overall impression is "couldn't care".

"Under New Management" "Come in and say hello"

12.10 Monday

We went in. We stood. We waited. Eventually a chap arrived carrying a plate of pies. Had half a Ringwood. Bit old, not worthy of a second but not bad enough to return.
No one in when we arrived. 4 when we left.
Bizarrely they dont sell bottles of wine only single small ones.
Whole place smelt of paint and only visible food was said pies.

This is what I call a PUB. No pretentions about being anything but a place to go to for a pleasant drink . Three of us in there Saturday lunchtime..place was quiet but the two locals we spoke to were brilliant and as for the Speckled Hen...absolute tops.

Not too bad at all. The staff in the Canal Bar at the back are excellent-really friendly and efficient and it's usually busy without being too rammed.

I'm not sure which pub threepwood went to, i don't think it was this one! It's my local and i love it. There's plenty of choice in newbury for a beer but it's nice to go to a non chain pub that is actually a pub, not a sports bar or wine bar etc. I've always found the staff to be friendly and service good. Unlike many other pubs in the area there is very little trouble here and the thai food is indeed very good.

Once upon a time this was great town centre pub. Decent ales well kept and served. Now it's been turned into back-stage at the Muppet Show. Too many tattoos, piercings, rock T-shirts, (from last years gig,) bizarre hair cuts...(think punk rock from 30 years ago)dirty fingernails and roll-your-own...(and that's just the women....
Full of Glastonbury wannabies, part time hippies, and people who try to make one drink last all night...
