I don't know what is done in the "cellar" of this pub, but any beer drunk here tastes better than anywhere else, including at the breweries from whence they came! This may seem like hyperbole, but I am being absolutely serious when I assert that.
The banter among all of the customers in this small pub, and the lack of any non-ale distractions make this the original and the best Micro-pub. Always worth the schlep!The only thing wrong with this pub is that it's not in my front room (it probably would fit) or next door. On second thoughts that's just as well - I drink too much already. Herne is a relatively quiet village but it's easy to get to via the frequent 4 or 6 buses from Canterbury, Whitstable or Herne Bay although I prefer a lunch-time cycle there.

The beer never disappoints and sometimes astounds. The chat isn't bad either - Martyn bans any regular bores (or phone users - you have been warned).

Don't expect to find anything invented since 1960 apart from a Good Beer Guide or 2.I pop in at least once a week now. Gavin keeps a bit of cheese back for me and even treated me to half a pint once. I feel at home so the least I can do is a bit of cleaning up around the place, keep trouble outside and meet and greet the punters. It's the friendliest pub I know, full of fantastic aromas and even the odd traditional pub ball game when Martyns not watching.

An old shop that has been converted into a bar complete with a good selection of ales and a very knowledge owner..Colin I think he's name.

3 good quality ales were on sale the evening I visited along with a decent cider so I am told.

A really quirky little place that was neigh on full, good mix of customers a couple of very friendly and lovely dogs with their pleasant owners, make this a place I will definitely return to on my next visit to Ramsgate.Colin: a real gent who makes for a nice pub - micro or otherwise.
The ale choices can seem to be chosen by proximity to the pub rather than by quality or style though - so I can be drowning in lacklustre choices from Gadds' [sic] or Wansum (that's not to say all their beers are lucklustre), rather than something a little more engaging from further afield.
That said though, I have tried some lovely things there at times - trouble is, I always feel like it will be a loteery as to whether there will be some style of beer that I will enjoy when I visit.CAMRA South East Super Regional Pub of the Year, so SOMEONE must think it's the real thing!

Lovely little pub with quality local beers in fine form! Good bar staff and friendly crowd make this the best pub I have visited in Hythe so far.tucked away in a back street on the quite side of the military canal, very clean nice pub and very busy given it's location, this is the best pub in Hythe for real ale drinkers, with a good range of well kept alesCracking, traditional pub, freindly staff & locals & a good selection of real ales.
I had Whistable India Pale & Hopdaemon Skrimshander, both in good condition. Hopefully get to visit Hythe again & if I do I will definately call in to the Three Mariners.

Popped into this pub a few times last week. Well kept ale and friendly staff and customers. Dogs welcome too which is nice. The beer was very good and very reasonably priced, when I visited on a Thursday afternoon, but this is a local's pub, which is a good thing, as the beer is looked after.....but they did seem to be very cliquey.
But still worth a visit for the beer.........and the food was good value.

Yes, benton is certainly on a different planet to the rest of us, his post just doesn't bear any comparison to the pub I visited the other week and quite frankly I think it's just been done for effect. If I was him I would also consider signing on for some evening classes in English.........your grammar is rubbishA wonderful pub tucked away in the beautiful Kent Downs. Amazing food at a good price and a good range of 4 ales. We stayed the night and the receptionist was very helpful in accommodating our push bikes and we arrived around 7PM but she still had a smile on her face and made us feel welcome. very helpful staff all round. I think 'benton' must have been on drugs either when he visited the pub or when he wrote the review. An excellent place to eat, drink or stayThis is a restaurant, rather than a pub. It has a bar by the door (and that is it) , and when we were there the whole place was full of tables set for meals. There is nowhere for drinkers to sit. Beer and staff OK. But it is not a pub, or a place you want to linger. While I was there - and we did eat - the word which kept coming to mind was : pretentious. Not enjoyable.

Food falls below expectations given relatively high prices. Lamb was SLICED , disgusting. Mouldy and rotting vegetables. Yorkshire puddings were burnt and black. Overall too much fat, could have had more gravy and didn't taste like it was made from stock. Plates were slightly too small and wrong colour. Didn't display VISA sign so wasn't sure if they accepted it. Took in excess of 16 seconds to be served which is terrible. Roast potatoes were divine though. Beer? Who gives a sh!t. Ok, so it's been 9 months or so since the last review and things have changed slightly. The pub is under new ownership for a start. Masterbrew, Whitstable bay, Kent's Best, Asahi, Oranjeboom, and Wrongbow are all on tap and all in good nick. The interior of the pub is TINY and of very bland décor but the staff are extremely pleasant which is nice. I had a Sunday roast Lamb which I have to say I was a little disappointed with. The Lamb was sliced (as opposed to a shank) and was overcooked with quite a bit of fat on it. The yorkies were slightly burnt and the veggies were old and tired looking. The roast potatoes were, however, fantastic. But it still wasn't worth £14.95. Shame. But a nice place to come and sit outside and have a drink. 7/10.Scores out of 5

Comment: The Shepherds Neame went down well but only 3 of the range on. Great little country pub with a welcome offered to all comers it seems. Just like Schwartzenegger “I’ll be back”.

I have only used this as a stopover for an interesting beer on my way to East Kent. Beer quality has always been exemplary as has the range, and I've had a good welcome as a occasional stranger - despite some of the recent negative comments. The style of the pub is to be applauded,beer great 10/10. management 2/10.

Good beers. landlady is completely bonkers and rude They are only civil to the regulars everyone els is treated like dirt.It's not often I give a 10 to a pub but this one deserves it. The two ladies on Saturday 1st Sept were most welcoming. There were 10 ales on all Kentish ones I believe and between us we sampled them all and every one was in perfect condition. I'd love to go back. Definitely worth the £16 train fare from London to the nearby station.

They have a nice selection of real ales and the landlord is very friendly. It missed atmosphere though didn't feel like I was in a pub.

With the surrounding pubs not doing real ale they are actually in a niche market and first stop place when arriving at Ramsgate station.Prior to the new landlords coming to the pub, this pub was really at the low-end of many things. It is now what I can only describe as confusing. It has a similar feel to the Belgian Bar on the seafront but without the extortionate prices. I came by on a quiet cold night where the other pub I visited was empty - it was shortly after Xmas, so the atmosphere was a little flat.
The reason why I like this pub because it is an ale pub, it was well-priced, the locals are those you can have a good discussion with and it is quirky.
On the negative, it could have felt a little more comfortable - but I would say it was like the odd pubs you might find on the continent. It definately ain't English in it's inspiration. It's definately worth giving it a shout.I like wierd, and I like quirky. I like food, and I like ale. So this place should work well.
Certainly, I have always been made to feel welcome by the operatic landlady - but the clientele is limited to the same very small clique of "characters" each time I go there.
Through no fault of the hosts then, it has lacked atmosphere on the times I have popped in. Maybe more obscure choices of ale would lead to a more eclectic bunch of folk, or perhaps I've just not times my visits well.
I do like it though, and will keep popping in, hoping that it becomes one of the new gems of Ramsgate - it has many of the right ingredients.
The sign on the outside of the pub is absolutely awful though.

I don't know if the pipes aren't cleaned enough, or whether beers sits in the cellar too long, but on my last three visits, I have been unable to finish a pint. Adnams Broadside and Youngs Best were my choices, and I ust admit it ruined my stay.
In fairness to the landlord, the pints were taken back without any funny business, but needless to state, it can put you off choosing it as a place to sup.
A pity, because both the the location and ambience I quite like.This is a pub that has clearly maintained it's character inside and out. Nice mix of people and friendly staff. If I were local I would probably use it. The ales are very standard and not that inspiring, although I concur with the reasons for that given in the review below. I would happily pay £3.80 for a pint of something different but I guess the guvnor may have duifficulty shifting it. Nevertheless it's a nice pub with its own charm and certainly worth a visit. I now feel rude if I return a bad pint in this place (though the staff never begrudge it when I have done), I simply leave it.
The landlord seems a nice chap, but I wish he could improve his choice of ales and keep them fresher.
Would love to use this pub more if that was done.

We were going to take the Spa Valley Railway from Tunbridge Wells out for a Sunday lunch with our friends and our and theirs 19 month old kids... On booking and trying to get high chairs they said they didn't have any!! So let's get this right, you run a foody pub (the ONLY pub) at the end of a popular kiddy friendly tourist attraction and you don't think it's wise to maybe get a couple of high chairs in - seriously missed opportunity on their behalf!This place is a cut above the rest. Great service, great food, great choice of beers!
Always a lovely atmosphere, and everybody is so friendly you feel at home within minutes. If you are looking for a pub pub, then look no further. Dogs welcome, this is a proper english pub and i bloody love it!!!!My wife tried to make a lunch booking for ourselves & 4 friends but was told they did not do lunch on Mondays.Hey- ho we thought, we will walk there for a drink. When we got there we were politely told by the barmaid that the pub was shut for a private function. Having walked there for an hour I said that it was a pity that we were not told this when making the initial enquiry and left. I was stopped after 3 yards outside by the landlady (so she said) who berated me for being rude to her staff! When I tried to explain she started screaming at me at the top of her voice that I was banned!
Apparrently the louder you can shout the more right you are!
Only visit this pub if you wish to be insulted by a young female (never lady !) with no respect for the older generation

I've always enjoyed the beer here, though some recent comments suggest things have become a bit chaotic.

The toilets were blocked, and the chef walked out and where were the management? The Manager, who is entitled to his holiday, left his son in charge(he could not run a bath never mind a public house). Where was he? Nowhere to be seen, as he was out with his friends on the p**s. An absolute disgrace, and by the way, the gents were put out of service on Friday night, which meant the males had to use the disabled toilet, which some person thought that it was a good idea to be sick in, all over the floor! As a result of this, it meant that the male customers had nowhere to go! It was like a Carry On Film, albeit more funnier.Always enjoy a visit to The Partidge. Staff are always great, beer well kept as you'd expect, and the pies last winter were great. A nice way to remove yourself from the Saturday afternoon bustle of Bromley.

Somewhat above average Wetherspoons, but prone (as they can be) to being heaving with folk at peak hoursWas here on a Wednesday afternoon, and the beer was good and the place comfortably busy. But thought I'd pop in again on a Thursday night, and it was heaving with students. No chance of getting served, so I was off.A busy place but you get served ok and the place is clean with newly refurbed toilets. Beers ok but a bit flat for me, I suppose its how they are served in the south,I am from yorkshire! A few kids running around were a menace but ignoring that the pub is ok and staff seemed friendly. Worth a visit

old style country pub. real ales on. Finchcocks was good, Harveys was bad. & reasonable priced menu but roast beef was tough old style country pub. Four real ales on pump, Finchcocks was good, Harveys was just ok. Varied menu & quite reasonable prices but the roast beef was a bit tough! Took the family here for sunday dinner. Lovely country pub with three log fires all roaring away. 4 cask ales including finchcocks, a local westerham brew. We tried the beef and lamb Sunday roasts which were both fabulous, best Yorkshire puddings we've had for ages. Daughters had a homemade steak and ale pie and a sea bass from the specials board which they were equally as complimentary about. Recommended.

A great opportunity to drink local Kent beers, including a number which are not normally seen in this neck of the woods - among them the splendid products of Eddy Gadd from the other end of the county.

Black mark for atmosphere however, as the bar staff seem to be obsessed with playing pounding rock music (at least on Friday evenings). This is totally at odds with the type of clientele and the generally conversation-friendly set up of this one-bar pub.One of my favourite pubs in Tunbridge Wells. Up to eight ales available, though some are from the predictable Greene King range. Seems to support the Old Dairy Brewery which supplies some great ales as well as the Royal Tunbridge Wells/Spa Brewery.

Better since they've changed the prices to be based on beer strength rather than a flat rate. Usually a good atmosphere and definitely a mixed crowd, worth a stop by if you're in the areaPossibly the best pub in Tunbridge, 8 ales on draught, nice decor and what seems to be a good crowd. The barman when I arrived seemed a bit morose but it was only just into the afternoon. The crowd later that evening seems friendly for a mid-week turn out. All in all a must of any visit to the town and only seconds from the station, so a last minute pint easily possible.
