A free house, set in a small village in the middle of glorious countryside.

What a gem. The pub is located in the small village of Rattery adjacent to the church, no surprise there, but inside there is a surprise as the very old building housing the bar area has a new(ish) restaurant extension which has been done very well.

Several nooks and crannies of the bar area with four Devon beers are on tap including, at time of visit, Dartmoor, Otter, O'Hanlons and another one I forget...the Otter was in excellent condition. Warm welcome from the barman and the pub is now owned by a young couple who have clearly invested in the business.
Beer garden and large parking area in front of the pub.

Worth a detour and a trip down the narrow lanes.

Village pub with mix of locals and outsiders, but friendly greeting for all from landlord. Legend at 3.50 was in good condition.

I have been a regular visitor with family for some years. The beer selection is very good with Jail Ale and Legend (Princetown Brewery) usually on plus Otter and I other (usually from the Fullers/Gales range). The quality of the beer is good, the service is excellent and the food is unpretentious. Sometime you have to wait a while for food but i have found the quality and portion size good. Overall well worth a visit to this charming, well run, friendly village pub.

What a disappointment! Used to the great atmosphere of the Church House Inn at Rattery and the really delicious meals available during the 1990's and the start of the 21st century, we had reserved for a meal during our holidays this year as a "special treat" ( - we were hungry after a very long walk on Dartmoor). Little had changed for the pub dcor and the ale,
but the food was pretentious, expensive, over-cooked and utterly tasteless. We had the impression of being full (of batter and saut potatoes) but totally unsatisfied. The following evening I did a good fish supper at home for precisely one tenth of the price paid for the same number of people as at Rattery.
With such a wonderful site, you do not have the right to serve such rubbish and give such a bad reputation to Devon food. It is high time you "pulled your socks up"!!

Its all been said for me. We had a brilliant lunch here - food, beer and service all first rate. Didn't try the Otter but the Jail Ale was very palatable. One tip - the menu is good but the specials board is the real star.
