| I spent a year of college in Alnwick. On our first night in Alnwick, a bunch of us went in there. Arthur Smart was the proprietor... It was busy, and I tried flagging him down for a couple of pints of Heavy with two fingers wagging in the air. Being American, I didn't know what that meant at the time. He never did like me after that. I tell you what, though... they (the Black Swan) used to have the Plowman's lunch. If I recall correctly, it was a simple sandwich (your choice) a bowl of hearty stew or soup, and a pint of something like Drybrough's Keg Heavy for, like, a pound. Didn't hit many classes in the afternoons... Seems a shame to see such a wonderful part of living change into the "modern." kyosa - 5 Feb 2012 18:07 |
