user reviews of the Spread Eagle Hotel, Burton-On-Trent

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The pub is in a lovely location and worth a visit for that alone, the pub has recently been refurbished, its nice in that modern inoffensive bland country pub designed by committee type thing. The tables we sat at had been given a patination to make them look old, but it a bit unpleasant due to the stickyness.

Service was courteous but not really warm and we had to wait a while for our meals although the pub itself was not very full when we were there.

We went to the pub for an evening meal and had shoulder of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes followed by cheese board for myself and my partner had chocolate brownie. The meal was higher than average pub prices and although tasty and well presented was not really very filling, I could have done with another half a dinner again. The lamb was a nice portion but felt a little under provisioned with veg, if they had swapped the fancy potatoes and asparagus for standard mash and a decent portion of carrots or Broccoli it would have been better. The cheese board was okay, but again for 5 I felt a little short changed, only five crackers were provided and the Somerset brie was not very ripe and so had no flavour. Even my partner who is not noted for a massive appetite felt that she was still hungry after the meal, and indeed we had a cheese sandwich when we got home. If the meal had been a bit cheaper or they had given us more to eat it would have been fine, but as it was its hard to recommend the place. This is in fact the second time we have been disappointed by the Spread Eagle, a couple of years ago we were unimpressed by a meal at the place, we wont be giving it another try.
