I never thought the day would come but The Retreat deserves a special award of merit for effort as of late. Gone are the non-dynamic duo of Bernie & Jane and clearly the only way is up once rid of the dross. Indeed the new landlord is clearly a fellow of fine taste as is often seen supping in the nearby BACK OF BEYOND! Onwards and upwards! Lord_J - 30 Apr 2013 10:22
A vast improvement now under new management. The new owners have also managed to swing it so the building is the beer equivalent of a listed building. Something the last lot clearly couldn't manage eh? whisky_diet - 9 Apr 2013 12:39
I have to agree with the reviews below, since the rather abrasive previous landlord/landlady left this boozer has vastly improved. The new couple are friendly and have an actual sense of humour; something the last lot clearly couldn't grasp other than when getting dressed that is... camra_colin - 9 Mar 2013 16:32
New licensee seems friendly enough and there were free snacks when I visited. Beer range was still pretty good (Loddon/Ringwood plus a couple of others including Sharps - but not Doom Bar!!) The guvnor appears to like Ruddles which seems odd in a pub like this but he'll get over it. Hopefully the pub will prosper and the live music will remain,so best of luck. mcroyal - 27 Feb 2013 12:37
