user reviews of the Grapes Tavern, Bristol

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub is now called "The Grapes", not "The Grapes Tavern" and that's why this one is listed as closed.

There is a seperate entry for "The Grapes" so any reviews should be left there.

This is not closed, as the heading says.

This has recently been done up and now looks something like a cross between a bar and an art gallery. Definitely not your traditional pub look. Its got a rather bohemian atmosphere with wooden flooring, red painted walls, lots of wooden benches and a large mural on one wall, plus an interesting skeleton hanging from the ceiling. There was a plasma on one wall showing an rather odd black and white film with a giant turtle.

Much of the art is for sale, but with some of the paintings priced at 2,000 I dont imagine they sell too many of them, even in Clifton. Its not exactly a spur of the moment purchase you could buy with the change from your round.

That said though, the staff seemed pleasant enough, and it looks as though they put on a good choice of live music. The only beers were Wadworths, with their Bishops Tipple, 6X and Henrys IPA. The cider was Stowford Press.

Just slightly off the beaten track. A good choice in Beer Horizon which I had a couple of pints of 6x , henry's , and strong in the arm . As good as anywhere in Clifton village for real ale , with a friendly atmosphere , very clean inside . a good place to take a lady on a saturday night , a steady crowd , but not heaving , a largely undiscovered gem , very friendly barmaid / landlady . A breath of civillisation .

Wadworths have indeed improved matters since that 2006 review. Very smart and spotless pub, but a touch too clinical for a good atmosphere. Good ale.

Absolutely shocking. Clueless barpersons who had no idea about how to pour a pint of beer, let alone how to replace a barrel which was clearly off. I ended up feeling sorry for the so-called 'staff', but easily the worst pub experience I have ever had.

(Review from September 2006 and not previously posted for technical reasons on BITE, so may be out-of-date - I certainly hope that Wadworths have done something to improve things!)
