OK pub, aimed squarely at the student crowd, and perfectly good at what it aims to do. Shame the side pub (the "Duck @ the Dog"), which attracted a slightly older (ie 20s!) crowd, closed and after a brief period as a cider-only bar, is now nothing more than another room. wes_mantooth - 23 Aug 2010 20:28
We visited the Cider House part of the pub recently, which is a small side-bar and a haven from the rest of the pub. And the best bit? Around ten PROPER ciders on offer, including Thatchers and Westons, and all of it well kept. Excellent to find such a place in Southsea! mhanley - 16 Jul 2008 11:14
Nice relaxed place. Quite studenty with good music (great DJs playing interesting music on the nights I've been recently) most nights. Beer is reasonably priced and if you find the main section a bit loud the next door bit is quieter. Highly recommended! jonesor - 3 Aug 2007 12:00
The one eyed dog is owned by the same man who used to own Wine Vaults. It is pitched at a younger more student crowd than the vaults though and as such the music can be really in your face. HOWEVER if you love alternative music then this is great as local DJs play music from a table in the bar - very unpretentious(which is always a good thing) It's good in the day time for the free pool and juke box and is much less crowded than the evening when it can be difficult to get a seat. HOWEVER if you like your beer i would recommend the Duck next door which is more Wine vaults style and very laid back. for me it beats its sister (the dog) hands down on atmosphere and friendliness. beerandfoodlover - 18 Sep 2006 12:31
| A classic, big ol', spit-on-the-floor studenty pub. Average cross-section of drinks available to suit most tastes. Free pool during the day and a well-stocked jukebox. Nice relaxed atmosphere, assuming you're of the more alt/indie musical persuasion - not a good place for Ben Shermans and Burberry. Not sure what the current plan is, but I've witnessed some excellent DJs at work in the evenings here in the past. Under the same management as the Honest Politician and, until recently, the Wine Vaults. Pretty much occupies the middle ground between the two, both geographically and stylistically.
