user reviews of the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, Harrington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I suppose my expectations of the American drinking experience were pretty low prior to my year long trip to the US in 2004: like most Brits I carried over the Atlantic a typical set of snotty Anti-American prejudices that mainly revolve around the contention that the whole place is one big superficial scar on civilisation (and this despite having an American fiance!). However, in truth the part of America I saw (mainly the east-coast) had about the same proportion of glam obsessed dives that you`d expect to find in most British city centres. And what I did discover is that our American cousins are much better than us at combining a really good bar idea with excellent execution: a case in point being the 10/10 Flying Saucer.

Like all the best ideas the underlying concept is stupidly silly rather than restricting your customers to a choice of at most a dozen tipples, why not bring in 200 250 beers and at the very least select 5 of the best beers from a sway of nations to make up the number? I mean, why the hell hasnt someone else thought of this!? Is it quite simply a great plan as any visit means that you can try beers of a remarkable variety (and of a pleasing cost range) which to be honest you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. And for those who like a challenge there is a constantly running competition whereby all drinkers can record their sampling of at least one pint of each beer on the list and the successful entries receiving some well deserved and proportioned discounts.

Th execution of this idea is also faultless. The interior has a nice character with a whole menagerie of posters, signs and pictures cramping the walls and ceilings. The bar is the only glitzy element of the whole place, although it`s seemingly limitless length and awesome width makes one forgive this rapidly. The bar snack foods are typically American in their extensiveness, size and excellent production, and the service from the very attractive set of waitresses is flawless.

This place is quality through and through we could do with more places like this British side.
