user reviews of Glan Yr Afon Inn, Holywell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Difficult to find pub, despite its location near the A55. Has several different drinking areas. The beers are well kept. During our visit, the three real ales were Cottage Southern Bitter, Slaters Supreme and Purple Moose Glaslyn.

The Glan has good value weekday lunches and Sunday meals and you can eat them in lovely surroundings.

Part of the restaurant is quite contemporary but then it blends back into the traditional part. The lit photos of the Milwr Tunnel in the restaurant are quite beautiful. The kitchen has had a complete refit. Out the back a new sun terrace has been created. An effort has been made to maintain the Spanish/Welsh feel that Pepe created because this has been regarded as a really important part of the pubs history and one which should be maintained as much as possible as a tribute to Pepe.Every effort has been made to maintain and where possible improve the food and drink quality.

I hope that the pub is not modernised much. I liked it as it was when run by Pepe (the previous owner) who always had a wonderful welcome (in Welsh with a Spanish accent). The beer and food was usually very good, but service sometimes a little slow if busy.

The Glan Yr Afon Inn has a new owner, chef and manager ( as of Christmas/New Year 05/06 )and various improvements are being made to the facilities and services.

Whilst the character and tradition will be maintained the food, drink, accomodation and service is being improved.

It is planned to modernise some parts of the Inn.
