user reviews of the Royal Oak, Barton Le Clay

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After moving into the area the feedback we had received was that Barton was a great place to bring up a young family and everywhere was really child friendly and warm and welcoming..........This is not the case with the Royal Oak. On entering the building by a side door there is a massive hand written poster saying Prams and puschchairs are NOT ALLOWED IN !!!! I could not beleive that a local pub could turn away family business when apparentley the previose owners loved welcoming children and it was always a family place to go at the weekend........... Stay away from this place and visit the Waggon & Horses instead who welcome children and prams and buggies and even have a kids menu, which is what is expected in these times !!!!

Do you like a pub with a high level of customer service, great atmosphere and where you are always given a warm and friendly welcome? If the answer to this is yes, then please AVOID this pub like the plague.

If in doubt, then ask a lot of the locals in the village, most people seem to agree. This pub is probably surviving as its busy when the football is on, as it has a big screen. There are plenty of other places I would rather visit and spend my money in than this establishment.

Firstly we would like to thank this customer for his review. However there are a few words required in response to this entirely negative view, as a one off visit during the world cup final. Does he not expect to find "people/kids and an overflowing pub" during football games when the destination he is visiting is a legitimate Sky user sports pub, language always gets, shall we say flowery, during these times, and on a normal session within the oak, staff and management alike do try to the stem the flow. However obviously he has never worked behind an extremely busy bar when the noise level is high due to normal football viewing behaviour with banter etc. going on, when at times it can be virtually impossible to hear a customers request to refil a glass and he expects us to hear every "Fa'ackin C*nts" that is being said away from the bar area. As for "many of them falling over through lack of balance" we had no incidents what so ever of anyone falling over during the world cup. Our regulars are not rude and certainly not intimidating, so how does he actually know that the person/persons he is insulting are regulars, obviously he doesn't, he was not the only newby who visited us during the world cup, or for that matter any other time. Finally, I would like to say to this person - was this review written after a session at his own local, due to the time of late friday night, early saturday morning it was posted, and maybe he would like to visit us again to actually get a true vision of what we are like.

Had previously used this pub for a quiet drink.... However.... I ventured in on world cup final day for want of somewhere where I could watch it with a pint. Sat in the front bar as the entire pub was overflowing with people/kids. This was a mistake. Firstly one 'regular' walked up and stood right in my vision of the T.V... so I shifted... so he moved in front again... so I shifted... so he moved in front again. I politely asked 'Excuse me mate I'm trying to watch the match' the reply? 'And I'm trying to get to the f*cking bar but you're in the way.' This moron then joined his mates who conducted a conversation which every 2 minutes involved them yelling "Fa'ackin C*nts!!". Now yeah its a pub. Swearing expected. But this was a whole new level, plus there were children sitting within 2 metres. Plus when I originally walked in I recieved a plentitude of dirty looks for pulling up an unused stool. The management didn't care and carried on serving them despite many of them falling over through lack of balance of 'too much'. Definitely not coming back to this pub anytime soon. The regulars are rude to the point of making it intimidating to walk into 'their pub' and the management on that last occassion exhibited such a lack of regard for decency that this pub has lost any attraction.
