user reviews of the Rose And Crown, Dartford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub seems to get a lot of favourable reviews and obviously has a strong local following. Maybe I've just been unlucky, but I really can't see what's appealing about the place. For a start, the decor is straight from the 1970's (despite a recent facelift) which isn't helped by the U-shaped bar (formica tables anyone?). And whilst the staff have always been friendly when I've visited, it always feels like a proper "locals" pub with a distinctly downmarket feel. This would be fine if the beer was good - but the London Pride I ordered on my last visit was shockingly bad.

I think this place is missing a trick - with the new West Hill Development on its doorstep they could make a killing...but it would mean alienating the Millwall crowd. Is the landlord (a staunch Millwall fan) prepared to take the plunge? Watch this space....

A traditional, no nonsense locals boozer a short walk off the town centre towards the Grammar School. It looks a bit rough, ready and frayed around the edges but generally offers a friendly enough welcome. The U-shaped interior is a bit dated and old fashioned and the pub in general is quite badly laid out with the main bar seating often sacrificed to accommodate either a pool table or a darts oche. Most people seem content to congregate at the bar itself. Whilst the dcor is rather dated, there are a few interesting points of note namely a few personalized etched windows and an unusual tiled bar surface. Various football pennants dotted about (the pub does have Millwall leanings but football fans of all persuasions will get a decent enough welcome) and sport often shown on the big Screen or the well positioned plasma screen. Weekend evening entertainment can be a bit loud. This isnt the sort of pub that would expect to find any Ales but there are 3 hand pumps with London Pride, Greene King IPA and a guest beer (Everards Equinox last couple of visits) although more often than not, at least one will not be available. Quality can be variable but prices are reasonable. The pub is handy for Mick Jagger Centre and, whilst not many people will count it among their favourites, it does at least feel like a real pub unlike the trendy, all funky, modernized Oddfellows opposite.

Small, cheap and traditional is the best way to sum up the Rose and Crown. I paid a visit here yesterday (Nov 13th) and enjoyed my hour or so spent here. I found it to be both comfortable and relaxing and although a little off the beaten track, would definitely not be afraid to pay another visit if passing by again. Its one for the locals perhaps, but nevertheless
