Being ensconced in a wood-panelled corner alcove in this historic posting inn gave us the feeling of sitting more in a pub than a hotel although most other seating areas were far more anodyne. Greene King IPA, East Coast IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Round Corner's Steeplechase IPA were on sale; the latter was in good condition.

Called in here for a drink the other evening. I had never been in the hotel before although I've lived in BSE for 13 years. I found a pleasant bar with friendly staff. The downside, it was a bit pricey. A pint of Adnams Spindrift was 4-10 and a glass of Chardonnay 5-10. Certainly a very nice place for a drink but there a lot cheaper alternatives in the town.

It's a hotel rather than a pub, of course (I've been a resident as it happens -- quite nice, but glad we were on a deal...). The lounge makes for a very pleasant meeting place in Bury.

One touch I do like: as Bury's principal old coaching inn, dominating the main square, one would rather expect it to sell the 'home brew', Greene King. Well, turns out the head barman has an exclusive preference for the Sole Bay competition, Adnams! Must've been a kick in the teeth for GK's local rep...

Used to go here on a night out in town with my other half and at times were the only people in the bar. They have destroyed the bar area by turning it in to a cross between a trendy wine bar and student union. I may just be bitter because we were turned away the last time we were in their for not being "residents" at the hotel by a snotty polish bar man. Avoid this place and go to a real pub instead.

More a restaurant with a hotel than a pub, however the food is top notch and probably the best eatery in Bury St Edmunds.
