This has always been one of my favourite pubs in Wells. Although the Star Hotel was a close second (what's happened to that place??). I tried the Butcombe, spot on!! I hadn't been in here since 1987, it hasn't changed a lot. Still a great place to have a beer or 6!!

A classic coaching inn with a connection to the man who gave Pennsylvania its name. Unfortunately, more people seem to be interested in the connection with the movie Hot Fuzz and Nick Frost leering down from the wall is a reminder of how anyone - I mean anyone - can make it in showbiz. The exterior is lovely, the interior crassly modernised. Butcombe offerings were on tap, chicken nuggets available gratis on the bar top.

In here just before noon last Saturday and most of the customers are on coffee or tea.
3 hand pulls = Doom Bar, Butcombe Bitter and St Austell Tribute.
I has a pint of the latter which was excellent but then it should be for £3.50.

Visited late afternoon on a recent scorching hot day. The pub has a small courtyard at the back and this was where most of the customers were.
Pub is an old hotel with connections to William Penn. Had a decent pint of St Austell Tribute.
The pub is like Wells, nothing wrong with the place but lacking in excitement. Dont get me wrong the Cathedral is magnificent, but come late afternoon when the coach parties have left and the shops and market have shut there are remarkable few people about, and this is the middle of the summer

Large old hotel situated in the historic market place. Wedged as always when i made my annual trip to Wells Carnival.Plenty of staff though meant i didn't have to wait long for a beer,Doom,Glastonbury and bcombe were on offer at 3pint. 7/10
