| During the summer months my wife, a good friend of ours and I try to get out and visit pubs new to us or re-discover old favourites from years gone by. We take it turns to drive with the driver usually picking the evenings venue(s). Wednesday last (9th July) our friend had selected this establishment. We arrived early evening the warm sunshine bathing this idilic English village in a golden hue. The White Horse looked most inviting. In side we were not disappointed, we were warmly greeted by the licensee and had a very pleasant chat while she poured our drinks (Bishop's Farewell). We took up our seats in the bar area and established that dogs were welcome too, a big plus in our eyes. We chatted for a while and looked over the menue for future reference. As we enjoyed our second round of drinks a party of 4 regulars arrived and sat at the next table. We continued to chat enjoying both the beer and the atmosphere. Then suddenly without asking if anyone minded ney wanted, the landlady turned on the hitherto dormant Moron's Lantern. Apparently because some chaps, albeit sadly not from these shores, were kicking a ball around in a field on the other side of the globe. Having no interest in this un-gentlemanly pursuit (Did I say I'm from RUGBY!) nor indeed the stomach to have it forced fed to one in a public house we got up to leave. What happened next was the most rude and extraordinary behaviour I have ever had the misfortune to witness in over 35 years of frequenting public houses. The aforesaid party of 4 locals lept from thier seats with a velocity Mr U. Bolt of Jamaica could only dream of. Indeed one of the males had rested his backside in the place occupied by my wife just 2 milliseconds earlier and before I had even left the table! So be warned, if you want to quietly enjoy polite social intercourse over a pint of good English ale in a friendly village pub then stay away from Welton and the Whitehorse. | Have been visiting this pub over the last couple of weeks and had a meal the other night which was good.I know the previous review wasn't favourable towards them, and all I can say is they must have gone on a really bad night, as we had nothing bad to say. The steaks and pie were brilliant, as were the waitresses. And the pub itself.....Absolutely brilliant..... you get a warm welcome from the staff as soon as you walk through the door and this carries on throughout your visit. The landlady and her main helper are brilliant at their jobs, not only willing to have a friendly chat with you, but remembering what your favourite tipple is which is always helpful towards the end of the evening. The rapport they have with the locals is something else, they are like one big family, laughing and joking, even during busy times. | AVOID...Well we have just come back from what started as a good night with a hope of good food ... The food was average apart from the steak -that was very poor, over cooked first time then raw the second attempt. But in defence the steak was so thin it would be hard to cook to order.. The landlady told us she would take one meal off the bill Some of our party left before we got the bill - when the rest of us left she (the landlady) stated that the party that left early said to add the steak meal back on the bill This was a lie and later admitted by the land lady .I WOULD NOT recommend this pub I don't like being lied too Village pub has now been tainted and not to be trusted AVOID Welton1 - 18 May 2013 00:51 |
| Speak as you find. Wish this pub was near to me! I called in for lunch as we drove north on the M1, as we avoid service stations at all costs. Found this place from the Good Beer Guide 2010. What a lovely landlady. So helpful and friendly. Beer range was excellent in my view - the Purity was in superb condition. And the food good too in quality and price. The local residents should value what they have and support the place. We even got her advice about a B/B place up the road when we are next due to drive north, as will use it as a stopover as an excuse to visit this pub again. GrahamH - 14 Dec 2009 20:20 |
| Agree with all previous comments about excellent staff and friendly atmosphere. There does seem to have been a change on beer policy over the past year or so though. On previous visits it seemed that there were four real ales offered which were regularly changed and always in good condition. On my most recent visits there have only been three - Batemans XB and Purity Gold at 3.8% each and TT Landlord which I found to be indifferent. This is such a good boozer in all other ways it would be a real shame if ale standards slipped further from the previous very high level. Thuck_Phat - 14 Sep 2009 11:49 |
