No reviews for a while? As part of a Nothumberland/borders tour we were staying in Haltwhistle (means 'a watch between two rivers' i.e. N & S Tyne), nought to do with trains, apparently. The food and beer is excellent. The food is certanly ample Northumberland fayre and the real ales are well kept. The starter, black pudding & haggis stack served with a whisky cream sauce, salad & seasoned new pots or chips, was to die for. The lamb shank was huge and beatifully slow cooked. The other choices on offer were also home cooked, and sauced hand made. Highly recommended if you are passing. They don't take bookings, just get there early.

Just come back from this pub - very good atmosphere with an excellent selection of beer. The Worthys Autumn ale was a revelation and the food was good. Excellent service and friendly staff. I wish my local was this good

Visited at 12.40 yesterday, pub empty, enquired whether any of the 6 real ales had been sold today - none replied the uninterested landlord / barman. Are you going to pull any off, no replied the same. At that stage I turned round and walked out. This was a great pub at one time, it would be busy with diners and drinkers by this time with a great selection of nibbles on the bar, the current owner has no interest or knowledge of customer service and the usual boring pub-co selection of beers. Try the Comrades Club down the road towards Hexham, great beers and friendly service.

Nice little pub with very a very good beer selection and a welcoming open fire at one end. Slightly annoying that they use sparklers on southern beers in such a highly rated CAMRA pub. We found the landlord a bit rude after we returned our beers to the bar upon leaving and thanking him - he said not a word in return. Nice customer service.......

The new (year and a half) owner of this pub is getting just about everything right. Great atmosphere created by him and the friendly staff and locals. Great food and 6 real ales. Cosy bar to eat in or there is a seperate dining area if you prefer. Lots of books and leaflets about the local area. Frequented and well liked by local Camra. Whats not to like.
