user reviews of Craven Arms Inn, Cheltenham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Lovely beer garden to sit in and a proper drinks menu brought to the table along with a jug of water! I settled for a £4.90 pint of Otter Tarka Four lager last Saturday as it was too hot a day for the Stroud Tom Long, North Cotswold Shagweaver or Otter Bitter (all £4.35). BBF North Street Cider and Dunkertons Black Fox were the draught ciders (they said they like to avoid the mainstream here). Also a few bottles from Deya. No reason for me to venture inside the pub but it looked like somewhere we might consider returning to.

A decent option for lunch about 4 miles off the A40 in the lovely village of Brockhampton. An elderflower beer went down well as did a pie with chips (technically a casserole with a pastry lid, mind) and the premises are housed in a lovely building. Probably a little more geared up for diners than drinkers.

I agree with the previous review however, although the food was good (little over priced) all of our groups were disillusioned by the managerial staff. Rude and abrupt, they made us feel very unwelcome, which lent to a generally unpleasant experience, especially considering we were paying premium rates (definitely over priced) to stay in their adequately furnished B & B rooms. We can safely say that we will not be returning, and would like to warn others that although the food was good the managements attitude towards outsiders makes the Craven arms experience one that should be avoided. There are plenty of other lovely Cotswold pubs in the area and we encourage you to go else where.

I was told this pub had changed hands and heard of poor reviews on other sites. I went there last week and found it as good as ever. Manager may have been away but the young staff were very friendly, the food and real ale excellent.
