user reviews of the Prince of Wales, East Barnet

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Prince of Wales was my last pub of the night and was also the last pub I hadn't previously visited in the North London area from the last 15 editions of the Good Beer Guide. It hasn't been reviewed for over 6 years and I'd say it has improved substantially since then. There was a mixed clientele with some lager swillers at the bar, a younger group near me and a couple playing what looked like a very complicated board game in the corner. The ale range wasn't bad - Hobsons Old Prickly, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Fuller's London Pride & Sharp's Doom Bar. But I plumped for the Lilley's Mango Cider. I quite liked this pub. But it's a bit off the beaten path.

Humdrum chain pub which served up a very mediocre pint of Adnams. A very indifferent and undistinguished place. Can't actually believe this place has a GOOD beer guide listing.

Does a very good pint of Adnams for 1.89. Also Speckeled Hen is available. The last time I was there on a Friday night with a friend they had some students who set up a small stage to perform comedy, but that's the first time I've ever seen that in all the years(20) that I've been going there. Unfortunately the stage blocked off one of the toilets. Mainly a locals boozer, so you see all the old faces over & over again - like mine !!

A pleasant surprise. The last time I was in here was prior to the implimentation of the smoking ban, and the all-pervasive fog of smoke that was a feature of the pub back then made it a fairly unpleasant environment to drink in. Now, however this is a nice airy environment to drink in with a pleasant atmosphere.
Range of drinks seems to have improved as well (amongst other draft ales they had a very good drop of "Bear Sknifull" ). Prices are reasonably cheap, service is good and the food is also tasty and value for money. Stay near the bar for a cosey local type atmosphere, or move round the back for a more modern and spacious area where they also have TVs for showing the football. There is a small beer garden to the rear as well, which is nice for summer evenings as indeed are the few benches out on the front of the pub overlooking the street.
Overall nice and worth a drop in if you are in the area, however not so great that you would go out of your way to head there. If they added the little extra something this lacks to change it to the other side of the good/great divide (possibly some form of entertainment, or maybe a more specialised food menu) then that could quickly change.

I always used to think of this as an 'old man's pub' and the only real ale they served was Bass - which always smelled of eggs. However, these days it has a varied and much improved selection of real ales. They look after the beer better now and the quality is very good. The only decent pint you can get in the village these days, and cheaper than the Builders Arms.
