Not complete;y in agreement with 'thesaintsfan' - but I can see his point. However, i visited on Saturday and the Ringwood best was in great condition. The place was friendly and the staff polite and attentive (and I aint no student!!). It's not a bad little pub. 5/10 wolvesfan - 12 Dec 2010 16:09
Just because a bar is aimed at the student clientèle doesn't mean that it has to be a pit, only suitable for lary youngsters. The bar area is just about OK; from there everything goes downhill. The 'smoking area' seems to be a screaming and swearing area as well, with the odd fight thrown in. It is, however, when you visit the toilets that you really reach the Winchester equivalent of Dante's inferno, only without the heat, actually without any heat at all. If you could imagine a pub toilet twinned with downtown Basra following a spate of insurgent bombings then you get the idea. The management started updating the facilities a few years ago and then seemingly thought 'f*** it why bother?'. The gents is an absolute disgrace, with broken tiles, unfinished ceilings and god-knows what else as I have never dared to enter the cubicles for fear of catching something incurable. With this attitude towards their customers this place deserves to be closed down, sorry burnt to the ground and rebuilt by someone more sympathetic and less greedy. thesaintsfan - 11 Dec 2010 00:31
I only popped in here to use the toilet really. My half pint of Staropramen was awful as was the music. Noticed another customer screwing his face up in disgust after tasting his pint. One to be avoided. Pat_Bateman - 6 Sep 2010 11:23
Incongruous mixture of an old building unsympathetically furnished with those very fashionable light wood tables and chairs of various heights. A side alcove is furnished as a leather pervert's front room with low leather sofas in black and some even lower tables, some messy artwork adorns the walls. Wide eyed and confused staff, the only customers were a sparce group of youngsters in the garden, myself and a middle aged canoodling couple. You are now thinking the beer can only be a dreary range of kegs and perhaps a badly kept guest ale on a solitary hand pump; well almost right: the choice of Deuchars or London Pride might have disappointed but the Pride was very, very good. The moral being don't judge a book by its cover or a beer by its pump clip. This is very possibly a good venue for the under 25s at the weekend but then I'm just going by its looks there, being as I'm over 50. oldboots - 12 Jul 2009 20:01
| i may differ from my peers in this case, ie writing on blogs, however i agree with them about the places we like to drink in winchester and i feel that the people that have commented on a STUDENT pub will not be as interested as people from a different generation. Alfie's does need a clean i don't disagree however the atmosphere of the place and being so friendly is what is so attractive about the place. friendly staff who are attentive and do try their best to cover its imperfections makes up for a lot of the problems it has. i think when critisizing this place you have to understand it is a huge step up from when it used to be the Old Coach House which was unbelievable!
