From the moment I first visited this pub I knew it was a special place. You cannot fault the efforts of the landlord to source such a wide and varied selection of beer on constant rotation for prices that put other pubs to shame. If it is for a full session, a quick pitstop, or to try your luck (sorry I mean skill and knowledge) at the Thursday night quiz its a great place to be. But Shhh, don't tell everyone about it - it is our little secret! Dazzebo - 16 Apr 2013 19:04
The GBG yet again saves the day. WELL worth the treck in the rain from the Gunwharf Quays, where the pubs are greatly over rated and even more over priced. This is a gem, friendly landlord, friendly local customers and excellent beers. Island Yachtsman, Rhymney Scrum V, Stepney Green and Jamaican from Brodies and Oakleaf Texas Red, Dark Star Festival. Just missed the Oakleaf Hole Hearted. TonyMitch - 15 Feb 2013 09:33
Packed on the Saturday we visited but worth putting up with the congestion for the fantastic beer selection on offer. The beer from local breweries was good and at prices of £2.70 to £3.20 (most were £2.70 or £2.80) it was good value for money. Decent selection of foreign bottled beer again very well priced at £3.00 a bottle. A propr drinkers pub popular with locals and beer tourists alike. Pleasant and efficient bar staff. beershot - 12 Nov 2012 17:34
I wont be popular here but speaking as i find - my last visit may be my last for a little while - ale good and cheap as always, staff a bit indifferent on this night but the landlord was nothing short of rude to us which surprised and disappointed us, ok maybe he was having a bad day we all get them. Also we got non to subtle looks from customers who obviously were not happy with our having a table they wanted. I realise locals can get like this but I have never experienced this or the landlords attitude in this pub before. odbod - 25 Sep 2012 11:19
This fairly intimate pub, situated at the better end of Castle St, is all about the beer. The Avocet was very good and the punters seem a lively convivial bunch - the type of place you could sit in all evening, whiling away many hours before chucking out. pkrp - 9 Sep 2012 20:54
