| I've spent two very pleasant evenings here, but many years apart. On the first, the landlord was a proud trade unionist, and the wall was adorned with commemorative china plaques and plates from various historic industrial disputes. More recently, all trace of this past had gone, but the locals were still convivial and the beer fine. | This is one of those handful of quirky Peak District pubs where the personality of the landlord or landlady defines the character of the place. Think 3 Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires, Quiet Woman at Earl Sterndale, Barley Mow at Kirk Ireton. They run the pub on their own terms. Real pubs run by real people - warts and all, and all the more interesting for that fact.If you don't like it there are plenty of generically "nice" clone pubs around. Two areas - the tiled-floor bar where dogs and muddy boots are welcome and the eating lounge where they aren't and the landlady, with her forthright Australian attitude will tell you in no uncertain terms if you transgress. The bar is cosy and intimate with a limited choice of ale. Only Batemans XB on tap when we went in as she hadn't done the cellar work that morning but the XB was fine,if nothing special. Unsurprisingly the landlord wears the pinny and cooks the food. I had tuna sandwiches,chips & salad - good food at a fair price. The beer and tea was not a fair price. �6 for a pint of XB and 2 mugs of tea. Two more tourists had regular meals which looked good, (certainly not microwave rubbish) and they praised the food as such. The landlady on this occasion was very friendly, disposed to chat freely with her customers. She gushed over a dog we brought in, rushing over with a chew for it, (though the dog looked a bit frightened of her) and how many pubs have a notice on the outside allowing hikers to come inside out of the cold to eat their packed lunch in the pub - so is she really as fearsome as previously described ?. | First visited lunchtime for a pint-- it wasnt great-- or was the beer soured by the landladys scowls? Sucking a lemon springs to mind!! However the food menu looked good so we bit the bullet and returned in the evening for a meal. Tried hard to make conversation and found some common ground. Enquired if certain items were homemade and told NO-- we,re a pub, not a restaurant. Sadly this wasn,t reflected in the prices!!. However we were assured that the chips and veg were "real" God , it was awful!! even the frozen peas were inedible-- food overcooked and tough, and the chips were an iceland cheapo special. Now, no disrespect to Iceland-- they do some good stuff , but this food was appalling. When I complained , a couple of locals were asked if they had ever had a bad meal. They cowered in the corner and said no. I suggested they may be scared to venture their true opinion due to the icy demeanour of the landlady, at which point they cringed even more.
