user reviews of the Sun Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I'm not really going to argue with the previous reviewers as we took family there for lunch and went for the food. The Thwaites Wainwright and one from Hawkshead Brewery were both very good. I didn't try the Kirkby Lonsdale Singletrack.

The second time I agree with "Pat".

The Sun Inn was, up until 2007, what could be described as an upmarket pub/restaurant, with sky-high prices and snotty service to match (well it is Kirkby Lonsdale). The sky-high prices, and snotty staff/clientele remain. The pub is most definitely gone.

If you want a real pub, take the bus and go out of town.

This is a restaurant (not a pub) with a fancy menu and prices to match.

Did not go in this 'pub' on this trip but went in on the previous visit and found it difficult to find a plce to sit or stand at the bar for a drink as it was full of diners even thought dining rooms are at the back. It does not have the feel of a pub although the beer and food may be good. I think it probably appeals to the more affluent incommers than most of the locals but hey there is something for everyone in this town and it keeps them from turning the other pubs into trendy winebars hopefully.

Remember this is just an opinion and you may read this and like what I didn't which may prove helpful to you.

The pub across the road The Kings Arms Hotel, which does not have an entry on this site yet, is very good and has a massive carved stone inglenook fireplace in the back which could be part of an original old hall by the looks of it. The place has a real pub feel and has people playing pool and darts. Enjoyed a very well kept pint of Theakstons Best Bitter. Rated 5 for the Sun 6 for The Kings Arms Hotel.

The Sun is a nicely refurbished pub in the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale which has recently been recommended by the Observer as a pleasant little hotel. It has very friendly staff. The main bar is a long narrow room with bare floorboards and a variety of different tables. Behind the bar area are two dining areas with modern furniture which, whilst obviously not a traditional pub, at least remind one of one.
There were 4 beers on my visit including Hawkshead Bitter, well kept Taylors Landlord and Jennings Cumberland Ale.
The midweek lunch time food is very modestly priced (eg 7 for (warm) ham, egg and chips) and good quality but it is worth noting that a portion of chips numbers only six.
