Crooke is a tiny village on the western edge of Wigan. Take the bus to Standish Lower Ground and take a quick turning on the left and you feel like you're in the countryside, with a nice canal and marina with plenty of moored barges and old village cottages. The Crooke Hall Inn is a relatively unspoiled village local that we were glad to have sought out. There are 2 or 3 separate rooms and food appeared to be fairly popular. The bar staff were friendly and happy to make conversation. Beers on were York Yorkshire Terrier, Allgates Napoleon's Retreat & All Black & Boggarts Rum Porter. Well worth the trip out of Wigan for.

Downstairs bar is fantastic and a credit to the new Landlady. Don't normaly drink lager but it was a hot summers afternoon and two pints of Fosters went down very well, the best I've had in a long time.
Unfortunantly the village green next to the pub was full of lowlife drinking cans and bottles they had brought with them in Aldi bags. The language and general behaviour made the pubs play area unsuitable for children, a pity as the pub is a cracker.

Excellent Allgates pub, as they all seem to be. A good combination of good, interesting, cheap beer (1.95 for a gorgeous stout) in an atractive pubby puildingn with chatty locals. Child-friendly too I think. Hope they prosper.

Good selection of Allgates Real Ales, about 15 minutes from Gathurst Station, via the canal.

Lively atmosphere with Setanta Sports.
