| the queens ground hotel sits on langsett road in hillsborough, opposite the barracks. its a pubmaster pub, advertising "modern en-suite" accommodation. I called recently one workday lunch. *** its an old fashioned post-war pub, the sort my grandad would have been used to in the 40s. [thats no knock, as I like the old pubs. Theres something I find re-assuring about pubs I remember as a kid]. on the outside, a big timber door and large green window frames with stained glass wording for "smoke room" and "billiards room". theres no car park as its a town pub. daytime custom seems to be a few locals, and groups from the offices in the barracks over the road at lunch. *** inside theres a central bar, a decent sized lounge to the front, leading round to a billiards room to the rear with a full sized billiard table. the lounge seating and furnishings are aging [nicely] but are well-kept, clean and smart. Whilst not exceptionally ornate, it is a classic "old-style" pub. *** you come across a yard at the rear that has been done out with seating and tables, part of which is covered. it doubles as a beer "garden" or smokers area. the toilets are basic but clean, with what looks like a recent tiling. *** there is no food available, and there are no cask ales on. I happen to know they did have tetley cask bitter on quite some time ago, but it was obviously not selling sufficiently. I had j.smiths keg magnet ale at £2.15, which was quite acceptable. *** verdict: quite a nice, comfortable pub inside. but with no food or cask ales, can only give a 4. reynard - 18 Dec 2008 17:25 |
