user reviews of the Golden Fleece Hotel, Thirsk

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Imposing hotel right in the centre of the Market Place run by Masham's Black Sheep Brewery.

Smallish bar to the left of the reception with a lounge dining area leading to the bar where there's 2 hand pumps, the ales were Black Sheep Cask Best Bitter and my choice Pennine Brewing Co Hair of the Dog @ 3.9%.

The bar is very tastefully decorated with lots of tartan style patterned chairs to go with the checked carpet. In addition there is plenty of horse racing pictures on the walls, along with horse themed wallpaper and a few glass display cabinets with local race badges in. The other seating area on the opposite side of the hallway is more like a library and reading room. Nice relaxed and friendly feel to the bar, with all punters made to feel welcome.

Of course this is a hotel and has a large restaurant but the bar shouldn't be ignored, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

8/10 and that's for the ale, decor and calm feel.

From the outside the Golden Fleece looks like a normal pub, but on entering it soon becomes apparent that this is not so much a pub, but a hotel with a public bar.

On my Friday afternoon visit, it was pretty quiet inside, there was a couple having a drink and a chap on his own who appeared to have been deserted by his other half (judging by the remains of a half of lager on his table next to his pint).

The young lady behind the bar was very friendly, and a credit to the establishment. After handing over my change, she realised she may have inadvertently short changed me, and insisted that I check my change and subsequently corrected her mistake. Honesty like this is to be admired, I would easily have tipped my change into my wallet without realising I was £1 lighter than I should have been.

There was a single hand pump, which was serving All Creatures by the Black Sheep Brewery, a 3.5% pale ale. The pint was pulled well, allowed to settle then topped up before being handed over. I can only describe this as a somewhat creamy real ale, with a creamy head on it. This is not a complaint at all and was very refreshing.

We had lunch here whilst visiting Thirsk in March this year and were impressed. I would certainly rate it as certainly one of the better pubs in the town.

It is clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and efficient. And as oldboots says there is a strong horse racing theme. The Black Sheep was pretty good and so were our meals. We checked out the other pubs nearby, but the Golden Fleece seemed to be head and shoulders above the others. More to the point it seemed to be very popular with the more discerning locals, which is another pretty good sign.

After lunch we visited the World of James Herriot (BBC TVs All Creatures Great and Small) in nearby Kirkgate, which was very good too.

An old coaching inn from the days of the Great North Road. Large brick building on the market place popular with the 'turf' on race days. The bar is decorated in modernish style with high back chairs while retaining an older elegance. Racing memorabilia, framed silks, members enclosure badges etc. give a racing theme. This is definitely the kind of place where all the chairs match. Well kept Black Sheep bitter and Shep's Spitfire, the usual Guinness, Carlsberg, Strongbow and Tetleys plus San Migel. Food is good and reasonably priced, mains around 7. Service pretty good, the barman pulled off a pint or two to clear the line before serving me as I was the first on Spitfire that day, although he was sometimes absent from behind the bar when needed.
