Visited for the first time end of last year and have returned a few times since. It's a pleasant place with friendly staff. Nothing special but nothing to complain about (except for me, the two TV screens)
Beers well kept and the food looks OK but I haven't tried it yet.
Worth a visit !

A smallish 'country style' pub serving food but the small bar retains apub feel to it. Only two alws on - GK IPA and Adnams Broadside. The Broadside was well kept and drinkable. Vintage buses terminate outside the place at weekends during the Summer. Not a great pub but not a bad one either so can't understand the low rating.

Popped in here last Sunday afternoon - place having been recommended last year.
I was surprised how small it was. Inside to the left is a small restaurant area. We sat by the window which had excellent views up the slope into Ongar itself. There was a choice of only one roast (it was 4pm) the pork. Nicely presented with superb roast potatoes for 7.45. My wife had the lasagne. Beers were unfortunately a choice of two - adnams and Green King so nothing over 3.7%. In front of the main bar is a small "snug" area which was being used for after dinner drinks. One family filled this area on the day we visited. The bar itself is tiny but there is another bar through a door round the back.
This place has great character and we will return to try other items on the menu in the coming months. Beer choice could do with a lift by the inclusion of a stronger beer.
