| The "Humph" was my local when I worked in Whitehall in the late 70's. It remains rather staid yet upright in character. Some might say lacking in colour but then, strangely, grey is the colour of Whitehall. The "back room" is a haunt of senior Civil Servants and it is an amusing pastime keeping an eye out for Ministers, especially on Thursdays, nipping in for a quick stiffener. This is especially true if they are, as we used to say, "in purdah". The bar features an unusual collection of handbags some having been damaged by the occasional European foray.
