| Totally agree with Martinsh.. I'm from Leicestershire, so haven't got any Joules pubs that near, but have been in them in Leek, Lichfield, Bridgnorth and Ludlow, and always found them good. The Rose and Crown is (as again pointed out by Martinsh) large, surrounding the courtyard on 3 sides. I can't remember all beers when I visited on Dec 30th 2019, but certainly pure blonde, pale, old no.6, slumbering monk from Joules, plus a Woods and another... so no complaining... | Taken over and refurbished by Joules, this is possibly now the best pub in Ludlow following the “demise” of the Church Inn (qv). It lies in a small courtyard off narrow Church Street. The entrance is at the far end of the courtyard – it’s not until you get inside that you realise that the rest of the buildings round the courtyard are part of the pub as well ! Inside it is large and rambling with thick stone walls, wooden roof beams and stained glass windows. The bar is to the right as you enter, and the area around is fairly spacious. However, the further away you get, the more tables you find ! There is even outside seating both front and back. With all this choice of accommodation, its no surprise that people are constantly wandering about. After a while though you start to realise that quite a few of them are staff members ! [ no uniforms here ] Many of the others are looking for the toilets – and don’t seem to notice the sign saying “washrooms upstairs”. [ At the top of the stairs the signs points to “Washrooms and Meeting Rooms” – I don’t think they are the same place ! ] There are six beers available on tap, the usual three from Joules plus their seasonal guest. And also two guest ales – beware these are behind a pillar and not immediately obvious. When I was there one of the guests was from Purple Moose. I had the Joules slumbering Monk, which was entirely acceptable. The food available as somewhat limited. A range of about half a dozen main course plus “sandwiches made to order”. It isn’t cheap either. I had the scampi (£8.95) which arrived promptly and was very nice. They then had to search for a bottle of vinegar for me ... The place seems to be a hive of activity. Various events were advertised, and I noticed that the next day would see both Live Jazz and a Quiz Night ! 8/10 – pretty much what a pub should be like Martinsh - 11 Apr 2017 22:47 |
| Joule's Brewery have refurbished the Rose & Crown superbly, opening up some of the spaces previously used for other purposes to drinkers. As a consequence, there's a lot more room and even more of the building's character is on show. I tried the Pale Ale on Christmas Eve which was in good condition. | Told it was Ludlow's oldest inn, which it may have been originally, but most of the fittings in the creaky-floored bar seemed of a more recent vintage. The long hop-adorned bar offered five real ales: Doom Bar; Wadworth's 6X; Castle Rock Harvest Pale; Ludlow Gold; and TT Landlord. My pint of 6X tasted vinegary but the barmaid changed it without demur. Food (sea bass) was very nice. Although there were a few people in, the atmosphere was very subdued.
