| After leaving this pub on Friday afternoon, we got talking to some fellow visitors and our general consensus was that this pub is slightly weird (or maybe it is just quirky). It is still in need of a lick of paint (the gents was pretty disgusting) and has an open fire with piped classical music, Thornbridge's Lord Marples (slightly cold) and Jaipur as well as Black Sheep on cask with Freedom's Four and Pilsner as the lagers. paul_d102 - 7 Apr 2013 15:39 |
| This is very much off the beaten track, although it is at the top of the 1 mile run down to the tourist (but tiny) hotspot of Milldale and the riverside walks along the Dove. Nice-looking little building, although a wee bit tired around the edges. Nothing a lick of paint here and there and a little bit of TLC wouldn't straighten out. Small interior dominated by the central bar, very quiet at 2.30pm on the Sunday we visited, although there was a fair amount of footfall after that as we supped our pints in the small beer garden outside the front door. Very, very decent Thornbridge ales on, Brother Rabbit at 4.0 and Chiron at 5.0, both very quaffable indeed, although not cheap at �6.30 for the two pints. | Had a great pint in here yesterday lunchtime, with a roast beef dinner. Both were excellent. Landlady, Chris was freidly and helpfull. The pub is child friendly, ast least during the day. mooseo - 14 Mar 2011 08:31 |
| Pretty stone pub just outside Alstonefield. Good for passing hikers or cyclists. Not many locals when I visited. Inside is cosy, but the garden outside was a bit tatty... Beer (Landlord and Black Sheep) in reasonable condition, although the Sheep had a rather scummy looking head on it. Food was a bit disappointing... my order of a black pudding wrap was a bit meagre and basic and so on that basis didn't live up to any pretentions of a "superior food" offering. Staff were efficient and courteous enough, but didn't feel any kind of genuine welcome. Should be a great place (and it was when I visited it a few years ago) but needs a bit of TLC. | Disagree with goalman2000. People who run this place are very friendly, if a little eccentric. The food is of a very high quality, you pay for what you get. Can always go to the chippy in Longnor.
