user reviews of Bird in Hand, Princes Risborough

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Bird In Hand was my second stop in Buckinghamshire on a Monday evening, following the Stable Bar at the Three Crowns in nearby Askett (not listed on BITE). The Bird In Hand is now longer under Greene King ownership. It is part of the Oak Taverns chain of several pubs, with their own breweries. The interior is cosy and relaxing. 4 real ales were on, with no Greene King beer in sight. Chiltern Beechwood Bitter is the regular ale. Bird In Hand Red Breast, St Austell Proper Cracker & Portobello Stiff Lip IPA were the guests. Certainly one of the better pubs of 8 I visited in the area. From here, I moved on to the Golden Cross in Saunderton, another not listed on BITE.

A Greene King pub doing good trade following a change in tenancy about 18 months ago. The undercover outdoor area was particularly busy on my visit. Beers on offer were Greene King Mild, the dreaded IPA and Bird In Hand Special which I suspect was a modified Old Trip, this dire choice fortunately accompanied by Chiltern Beechwood bitter and Rebellion Smuggler and Evolution. The Evolution was a very nice pint but somewhat spoilt by the price of £4.00. This is probably the Greedy King penalty for being allowed to stock non-GK ales as the average price for Rebellion beers in this area is around £3.50. I have no complaints about the pub itself which was clean and tidy with a very friendly welcome at the bar.

a pretty pub from outside, but a little lacking inside. none the less a nice set of locals, very friendly land lady and VERY dog friendly. very handy for the train station.

risborough really lacks a great pub in the town iteself (plenty of wonderfull places in the surrounding area) so this may be the best on offer.

In here last Saturday afternoon and its freezing outside and inside as well.
All wood interior.
I've been in 4 pubs in this town today and none have a carpet.
4 hand pumps but only 2 ales GK IPA and Old Trip which was very nice and cost 3.55 a pint.
