user reviews of Royal Oak, Wrexham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The ale wasn't quite as good on this visit as last time - still about one your best bet in the town centre though. No bouncers this time as it was 2 in the afternoon - but other places on the High St did have them this early. maybe they need them to deal with Wrexham's current zombie problem.

Joules pub which as the previous reviewer said was very quiet on our visit. Only 2 other customers were present. It has a long narrow room with an imposing antelope's head near the entrance. There are mirrors on either side to make the place look bigger. But it all feels a bit fake. In addition to the Joules beers - Blonde, Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk & Moon Madness, they also had Salopian Oracle. It was also the only pub on this visit to Wales that stocked a real cider (Rosie's Pig). For some reason, I asked if they offered a CAMRA discount. The barmaid asked what CAMRA was and was enlightened by one of the two customers. Unfortunately his description wasn't too complimentary. A strange kind of place. But as the previous reviewer has said, if I did find myself drinking in Wrexham town centre again, I'd probably gravitate here.

Civilised option in Wrexham (which whilst better than it was is limited - here, the Royal Oak and Horse and Jockey are the only ones I'd massively recommend in the town) with decent beer and friendly staff.

It is never it seems to me very busy though, probably as you have a Spoons right opposite selling ale at £1 a pint less; must be a real struggle for pubs like this to compete against likes of Spoons/Yates'

Old school town centre boozer that is on the High Street narrow but runs back a bit. Ale was good - being In Wrexham town centre's 'War Zone' means it has to have bouncers on the door after 7pm.
