Friendly pub that was busy this afternoon so we were directed into the extension (the "Garden Room") which is an oak-framed modern conversion of an outbuilding. They were quite apologetic only to be serving 3 real ciders; the 4 ales were Bradfield Farmers Blonde, Tetley's Cask, Rooster's Scrambler and Three Brothers Ruby Revolution - I tried the last of these which was very good. A nostalgic '80s soundtrack played throughout our visit.

My plans to tick off a few more Pickering pubs ended at the Sun. Handpulls on the bar were dispensing Helmsley Yorkshire Legend, Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde, Theakston Best Bitter, Copper Dragon Hop Stepper, Sonnet 43 The Raven & Rat Rat Bag. I was more interested in the range of real ciders and on enquiry was directed to a board to the left of the bar. 14 ciders were on, half of which I hadn't previously tried - Thatcher's Stan's Traditional, Pulp Raspberry Cider, Hawkes Urban Orchard Berry, Tree Top Press Tabular Hills, Tiny Rebel Protaropia & Peariscope, Skidbrook General Ludd, Ascension Gardenia, Kentish Pip Summer Session, Seacider Ginger Bread, Magpie Orchard Fruits & Dragonfly Salted Caramel & Fruity and Floral. I had just over an hour to get through them. But after that it was curtains. The pub has a main bar and an overflow room. There is a courtyard at the rear. What later turned out to be the landlady was running a small pub quiz in one corner. A few locals were a bit inebriated, whilst the pub also attracts its share of visitors, including a rather drunk couple from Cleethorpes. The young student barmaid was very patient in getting me through the 7 ciders. Although I swear the Dragonfly cider she gave me was not the one I ordered. But, my taste buds may well have been mangled by them. A superb pub that was easily the highlight of my overnight stay in Pickering.

Visiting this pub with friends last weekend it was all about the beer and there were four guests on with 2 regulars as well an adventurous range of real ciders. Excellent pub with a community feel about it. Def worth the walk from the town centre.

A Friday afternoon visit in late November to this award winning pub which has recently voted runner-up of best pub in Yorkshire.

The outside gives you the feeling this is a large pub but once inside it's quite small with the bar in front of you as you enter and a seating area to the right….however as you go through to the men’s toilets you pass through a large barn type room with tables and chairs and a dart board. Apparently this room hosts live music events.

7 ales on, of which 4 were guests. My drop of Small World Beers Secret @ 4.0% was very good. There is also Tetley’s on draught, this is as requested by the locals as the pub used to be a Tetley’s House.

The walls are decorated with brewery signs and trays mainly from Tetley's which isn’t a surprise. Next to the bar is a blackboard which display's a tally of 988 different ales that have been served here, it seems that all of the pump clips are displayed on the ceiling.

Out of all the pubs I visited in North Yorkshire during my week here in November this was one of the least friendly. Not in a bad way it’s just that the barman and locals didn’t seem that bothered about interacting with outsiders.

It’s worth a visit nonetheless as the beer was very good.

Well worth the walk from the Town Centre to find this excellent pub which sells 5 real ales mainly from Yorkshire which change to a different beer as soon as one runs out. Tetley Bitter is also sold as a non Yorkshire beer as the pub was a former Tetley House. There is a room for music and a lively Jam Session was taking place when we visited on a Sunday afternoon. Weekday openings not until 16.00
