Well this is gentrification writ large - and while I don't necessarily feel that's a totally bad thing - the ale selection proved to be excellent - it seems odd to emerge from a streetscape of fried chicken shops, places you can phone to Bangladesh and people of colour clearly having a tough time of it into this Mr. Benn style otherworld of well heeled white twentysomethings. Oddly, they boast about not accepting cash which seems like another ploy to sever any umbilical cord to community.

First time I went there it was great a little pub. I went back last week and it wasn't. seems more interested in being a restaurant than a pub. Every empty table had a reserved sign on., so had to go outside in the cold as if you attempted to sit on one (even if reserved time was over an hour away) you got booted off.
Served seven cask ales, board behind bar listed them all with prices, However, th board behind bar said Gun Brewery Smoked Rye was £4.20, was charged £4.40 for it as 'board was wrong'.
At least they served my ale in a jug.

A couple of years ago this pub was in the GBG and doing well, slowly but at an increasing pace it has gone downhill on every front, the new staff are ghastly and slow, the beer selection aims at novelty not popular demand, the toilet access is awkward. Just to underline how matters stand they take an overwhelming pride in the side road which has a few tables. Not only did the C&A not get into the guide it was ninth on the back up pubs for S.W. London! That says it all. I expect a far worse outcome when the next GBG selection takes place. To compare this to a Wetherspoons is insulting to the 'spoons pubs they usually get most things right.

I’ve been meaning to visit the Crown & Anchor since it was entered into the GBG but being between train stations I’ve never found the time until a couple of Saturday’s ago.

The rugby world cup is on the television during my visit so the place was pretty busy. Good quality looking burgers and other bar food was proving popular from the open plan kitchen at the back of the pub.

On the bar are 10 hand pumps offering a very wide selection of ales that included 2 real ciders. My choices of Big Smoke Brew Co’s Bonfire @ 4.5% & Sunny Republic’s Hop Dog @ 5.5% were both extremely good. In addition there are 14 other ales and lagers on keg, a couple of these I haven't seen in South London before like Jopen Meibok. As expected the kegs beers are more expensive than the cask by almost £2.00 a pint

The caps behind the bar we all young and trendy and seemed to be into their beer with one of them being extremely helpful to a group that had no idea what style of ale they wanted.

Opposite the bar are big open windows that look onto the side street and there are a couple of seats outside aswell.

All in all the Crown & Anchor was a good tick and easily reachable by bus from either Kennington or Brixton.

Some very good (and expensive) beers on tap, some even better ones bottled in the fridge; Belgians for the connoisseurs, Americans for the young craft lovers.. Don't bother with the food. Just finished a somewhat bland yet filling roast washed down with a watery coffee. The barmaids are all well fit tho..
Not bad for a middle class wetherspoons.
