user reviews of the William Withering, Telford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place has been slowly fading for the last five years when it used to be smart and tidy, with a good choice of ales and well cooked food. A bit different now. Its heading towards the usual Wetherspoon grubby table standard. Some of the food, in particular the overcooked burgers and chewy steaks are inedible and there have been many refunds. The biggest disappointment is the real ale policy. The house ales from Green King etc were at one end of the bar with the guest ales at the other. The house ales are now badged up at both ends and there appear to be fewer changing guest ales. Slaters Haka seems to be semi permanent as well. The quality is indifferent and this is why this Wetherspoon has been omitted from recent Good Beer Guides with little chance of a return on this form.

Branch of Wetherspoon''s on Wellington''s main pedestrianized shopping street. As with many, it goes back quite a way and service is slow, due to insufficient staff. This was despite it being a fairly quiet Sunday afternoon. The barmaid that served me didn''t have much of an idea about their drinks selection and had no idea at all how to use the till. Ales were Salopian Shropshire Gold, Ruddles Best, Slater''s Haka, Three Castles Autumn Daze, Goff''s Jouster & Conwy Rampart. Ciders were Ashridge Devon Bloom, Mr Whitehead''s Toffee Apple Cider & Sandford Orchards Kung Fu. I assume the ciders were left over from the not so recent cider festival. Luckily for me, the Kung Fu was one of the ones I never got to sample. Its condition was still good.

Pretty bog standard spoons (as in indiscriminate service, second rate ale, toilet location to dissuade people using them) though it was quite relaxing to sit by the window and watch the world (as in the odd mobility scooter) scurry past outside in the sea of charity shops.

Can’t believe that I haven’t reviewed this Wetherspoons yet. Maybe it’s because whenever I am there there is a beer festival on, and I don’t remember much afterwards !

I’ve been there quite a few times because I have a friend who lives locally. His rating of the places varies from “best Spoons in the country” to “absolutely awful” – sometimes on the same day ! Whenever I’ve been there though, it has usually left me with a positive impression. The beer range is certainly better than normal, with the 12 handpumps usually displaying a good range of guests – and no Doom Bar.

The food is standard Spoons fare, but I’ve never had a problem with it, and the staff are normally pretty clued up.

The whole atmosphere is pretty welcoming, with the large open plan room being broken into discrete areas by careful positioning of furniture. As usual with Spoons there are posters on the walls giving information about the local area, but these seem to be more prominent here.

However, a word of warning for those with weak bladders – the way to the toilets is long and precipitous !

7/10 – top of the range Spoons
