Community pub in a nice village. The café was busiest on my Wednesday morning visit. I was the only customer in the pub itself, which is much larger than it initially appears. 5 real ales were on - Marston's Pedigree, Thwaite's Wainwright, Stancill Stainless, Peak Ales Black Stag & Kelham Island Easy Rider. My Black Stag was very nice. Although the barmaid was struggling, as it was a bit lively. Somebody from the Peak Ales Brewery happened to visit whilst I was there. Apparently the Black Stag is a popular beer. Nice place.

Good Beer Guide 2019 - but I expect its more to do with the community efforts in keeping it going (attache is a cafe, shop and a post office) rather the quality of the beer.

The Chatsword Gold was in average condition.

The pub was nice and busy, with bar and separate dining area. Could do with some comfier seats - but I had been walking 16 miles.

Community run local serving decent ales. As mentioned they have put a lot of effort into retaining this pub for the local community and visitors alike (It could have ended up like the Derwent down the road). Four ales on those sampled were on good form. It is a bit of a hike (give yourself 15 minutes) up from or down to the station.

It's been a while since I last dropped in here and I can only say that it's continued to improve. There is a heroic band of volunteers who look after the general maintenance of the pub and the resident landlady Amanda keeps the beers on top form.
There are some regular beers and a couple of well kept guest ales along with simple but very tasty food. It's a real community asset and the efforts of all concerned deserve a round of applause. There have been many online detractors who only seem to complain, but notably none of them seem interested in making any effort to improve the place, so in my view it's all power to the community who do make the effort and long may it continue. Top marks for trying!

"apparently there has been some local opposition to the community buyout - why?"

Some people think that sort of thing leads to..........communism.....why, they might open a co-op next...
