| Came in here on 24th July. Undoubtedly an historic pub and the place has good feel about it. Small serving area and only one staff member appeared on duty so service was a bit slow at times - mostly though as many of the punters didn't know what they wanted to eat or drink and groups ordering individually rather than rounds. Somewhat an inevitable consequence of being an international tourist destination. Indeed, while I was a tourist, so far as I could see almost all the visitors were overseas. Nothing at all wrong with that but doesn't make for much atmosphere. Had two very nice pints of Old Hooky and served in a jug which I've not seen in years - probably an anachronism for the tourists :-) Anyway, fascinating old pub, beer was good but not much atmosphere. | Service is indifferent, but if you complain about it you wil get banned ! [ Happened to bloke in front of me ] They also seem to have removed TYolkein's seat since last time I was there. Beer is reasonable, but I won't be coming back unless I have to. Martinsh - 10 Jun 2018 22:10 |
| See my review of 11 Sept 2015. I LIKE the pub, but the same criticisms apply. The Oxford Gold was excellent , but the toilets are no better, worse even.This time, the light was n`t even working in the cubicle, and the smell would stun a Rhino at 100 paces. Another patron came in and used the cubicle in the dark. When he emerged, I asked him if these these were the worst toilets he`d ever used. "No," he replied, " but having a sh*t by the the light of my phone was a novel experience." Guys will put up with a lot, but why should we? This is wilful neglect, and the price of the beer is n`t cheap so it could be ploughed back into making both the Gents and Ladies facilities at least bearable. | 10:15 on a sunday night and a choice of this or the Lamb and Flag over the road. Both shut bang on 10:30. You can feel the history of this place dripping off the walls but the beer quality was dreadful. Old Hooky had to be sent back - dull, cloudy and rank.
