Visited in February. I had a Barnsley Bitter by Acorn, at £1.90 for a half, and I was pleasantly surprised by this ale - not bland at all and I would recommend it. Doom Bar was also on at the bar and another national that I can't remember. Yes it seems a bit chain pubby and food focussed but no issue with my ale.

The Boat Inn was very popular with the local middle classes. It has a nice setting next to the canal. Although the courtyard seating between various old buildings has no canal view. Service at the bar was slow, with customers forming an orderly queue. Bar staff didn't seem to know much about their products. But they were smartly dressed. Wells Bombardier, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Sharps Doom Bar & Leeds Pale were the 4 ales. We managed to find a table in the courtyard. But the table was filthy and the leftovers from other peoples' meals were on the floor. We noticed other customers using the staff's cleaning equipment to clean the food detritus off the table before their meals. Glasses were strewn across most tables. Whilst we were looking for food, the lack of cleanliness, the likely wait to be served and the generic-looking chain pub menu didn't fill us with confidence. So we moved on. Lovely setting. But looks as if it bites off a bit more than it can chew.

Paid another visit on a recent weekday lunchtime. The pub was busy, possibly due to the school holidays, but was quiet outside in the beer garden.

5 pumps at the bar on this visit - Doom Bar, Bombardier, Black Sheep, Old Speckled Hen, and Leeds Pale. I went for the Leeds Pale at £3.50. Not sure if the ale was about to turn past its best or if it just had a distinctive taste.

Visited here on a recent weekday around 5pm. It was a sunny day and the large outdoor courtyard was very pleasant to sit in. At the bar there were three ales available; I went for the Yorkshire Terrier by York Brewery at 4.2% costing £3.45 for a pint. Other ales available were Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen.

The Yorkshire Terrier settled clear and had a nice creamy head. Sitting outside felt nice and peaceful even though there were a fair few other customers in.

Worth a visit if in the area, especially on a nice day to take advantage of the outdoor seating.

We'd heard great things about this pub, so went last weekend and were completely disappointed.

There were few people there when we arrived, but after ordering we had to wait about 45 minutes before our meals came out. No apologies for the delay - the table next to us were ordering as we sat down but had had starters and mains and finished them before ours arrived, so we know there weren't general delays.
The food was ok although the sides orders were tiny for the price, but nothing to rave about. Noone checked to see if our meals were ok, and we waited about fifteen minutes after finishing before I went to queue at the bar so I could pay.

Overpriced for the standard of food, poor service and we certainly won't be visiting again.
