A multi-roomed old fashioned looking pub only saved because of it's listing and being in a conservation area - otherwise Fullers would have knocked it in to one big trough swilling piggery like it does with most of it's establishments. They do try to deter drinkers though with reserved cards on most tables and charging a cool £5 a pint for average lager.

Nice interior but there were too many tables with cutlery on and menu cards lying flat on the table. It looked like they had been set up to await scoffers and to deter the beer only customer. I asked a member of staff if there were any tables I could sit at and was told I could sit anywhere or there were other tables outside. I still felt I would be taking up scoffer space if I sat in the pub, my preferred choice, so I went outside. I drank a seasonal beer, Fuller's Southern Star. It was reasonable but at £4.30 for a pint, not good value.

Payed another visit to the Castle 2 weeks ago as our Ramblers Association meeting was cancelled. I thought I had walked on set at a Most Haunted filming. Where oh where has everyone gone. Even the barstaff have changed, thankfully the beer hasnt it remains woeful. I asked to speak to John the Guvnor but apparently he has been replaced by a hologram.
Is this pub being run down for redevelopment I ask.

I have an idea for a picture round question on quiz night next Tuesday, Guess who is the Guvnor of the pub since John left.

Have to say I havent been to the Castle for nigh on 2 years. I used to frequent this lovely pub with my Ramblers Association comrades. Dropped in Sunday, No sign of the regulars, where have they gone . No Celeste Mumford and his wee son Wilf. I for one wont be back in a hurry. For information us Ramblers now meet at La Colitis on the Hill every third Wednesday in the month.
